View Full Version : I Can't Hear . . .

the radio in my '70 Skylark 350. It's a factory a/m and lately I have to push on the tuning knob to get some sound, which is static enhanced. All the connections appear to be tight, any ideas? Also, there's an adjustment screw behind the tuner knob/fader switch that seems useless because when I take the knobs off to get to it, there's no sound? What am I doing wrong?

You Need A New / Refurbed Radio...the Screw Behind The Tuner Knob Is For Optimum A.m. Tuning-i Learned About That Years Ago. I'm Sure You Could Pick Up Another A.m. Radio Somewhere Cheap. Am-fm's Get A Little $.

Same thing happened to me. Put the car away one winter, the next spring, nothing. Talked to some "experts" and turns out that older radios will do that. Just crap out for no reason (well there is some reason of course but you know what I mean) I left it in and went with a Deck in the Glove box.

Remember the old TV sets that you turned the channels? The contacts got dirty. It's probably wrong, but I'd suggest squirting some WD40 into the tuner post and see if it helps. Can't hrt if it already doesn't work.

most likely the amplifier in the radio has smoked ..

Well, I tried the lubricant idea, works a little better, so I'm thinking maybe take it apart and give it a good cleaning inside. It's probably on borrowed time, though since it's the original radio. Thanks for the suggestions!

I had the same exact problem with my stock A/M radio and I finally decided to have it fixed. I found a local guy and he took care of me well, and the radio now works well, but then again what A/M radio sounds perfect?

I always thought this was a great idea. Put a stock Buick radio in the dash, and a good soundsytem in the glovebox. Just make up a plywood glovebox, and the thing even locks!

But now I am thinking of putting my gauges where the radio should go...
