ok I went to autozone today and my alternator is good. But for some reason my gen light is on. and the battery is not charging. What can be wrong?

Depending on what year it is it could have an external regulator. Therefore when testing the alternator off car it would test good.It is also possible that the amp output could be too low, Autozone's around here do not test the output amps just the voltage. I do not want to start a discussion from all the people who say if it puts out voltage then it works!

There is a good test in the manual on checking the system(Section 68 depending on year). You need a good volt meter (ditgital if possible).

It was the voltage regulator

Very good - how did you determine it was the regulator?

well the generator light is now off with the new regulator. But for whatever reason the altanator is at a constant wine.

Diode set and/or winding sector inside the alterrnator is defective.
For remote regulator applications, there is only one clearly better choice for replacement, Wells VR715. Internals are electronic, not stock points actuated.
Auto-Zoned-Out has them, low cost.
