Got the 4bbl carb yesterday I ordered off ebay – Huston we have a problem.

Carb looks nice, it’s the right one for my application, but there is a HUGE leak.

Carb is leaking pretty bad in the strangest place – looks like fuel is coming up under the left (drivers side) rear bolt hole. I can’t for the life of me see where it’s leaking from but it leaks like a sieve. Car runs fine for a few seconds then floods out.

I have an Edelbrock carb manual from a 600CFM (same as this Carter) to check the Float level – float is fine per spec (7/16 float with 1in Float Drop) so I don’t think that’s the problem. It’s not leaking out of the top because that gasket is dry. When I take the carb off, underneath it is soaking wet and the base gasket is soaked.

Looking down the Venturis with a flashlight there doesn’t appear to be dripping from there, so I’m at a total loss. I really need the carb, but obviously this won’t work.

Any suggestions on what else to look for?

Thanks!

Hi, the only thing I can suggest is that you may have worn check valve seats.
Everything you describe indicates a high volume level. I would start by replacing the seats and needle. (attached to the float). While your there check for pinched or worn gaskets in the carb. Hope this helps and let us know how you make out. Ian

Tried looking at it again tonight – no luck. Actually, I don’t think it’s a float problem or a fuel pressure problem – I think there is something leaking internally.

I’ve attached 2 pictures of the carb right after it was taken off the car. It was sitting for a few minutes and you can see fuel is leaking everywhere. The carb was not turned upside down or anything – it was removed horizontally and placed on the floor. The rest of the carb is bone dry but that one area is soaking wet. Even if it was leaking out of a throttle shaft – how would fuel actually get on TOP of that mounting ear. What’s even stranger is the top gasket is perfectly dry as well.

:puzzled:

What I think it *might* be, is that lead plug just to the left (in the picture) might be leaking. It’s hard to tell but that would be a logical place for a leak based on where the gas is coming from. I don’t have the skill to make a fix like that.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks!
