Question:

I am considering converting and was wondering the following:

- Did any of the 72 bench seat 4 speed cars use the consolette or was it used with the bucket set up only.

-Secondly if the bench seat (4) speed existed without the consolette, what floor hump, boot and retainer were used? Is a double boot used?
-Are these available as repros?
-Any pics. appreciated.

-My car has the plain base interior and I had planned at present to stay with the bench set up as it is in good shape.

-I have read most of the posts on conversion and I find them extremely informative.

Appreciate any comments , pics ?

Thanks

Paul

That is the shortest one we have ever had.

I've seen one 70-72 GS with a bench & consolette. Factory, maybe just not too sure. As for the hump, I got mine from a GTO (1968). All the '68 - '72's have the same floor pan. Remember, it has to be an A-body.

You will only need the lower rubber boot and chrome trim ring to run w/o a consolette. Again, the GTO part works well and looks most correct. I have not found the GS boot & trim ring yet. Don't know of anyone who makes them in repo.

To mount the hump, remove the benchseat & carpet set. Push the hump part into position (it only fits in one place). Take a sharpee marker and draw around the perimiter of the mounting flange. Then remove the hump. Next measure in 1/2 inch and draw a smaller cut line. Much discussion on how best to cut the hole. Sawzall seems to work well, possibly explosives or a chain saw using a rusty dull blade......

After cutting the hole, run 2 strips of dum-dum (caulk) around the hole and use self tapping sheet metal screws to hold it in place. That's all there is too doing the shifter cover.

Hope it helps,

Jim

A double boot was uses with a consolette. I have never seen one used with a bench seat. I always thought the forward travel of the bench seat would be restricted by the consoltte. Yes, Trim parts remakes the boots. They are sold by www.thepartsplaceinc.com and pehaps others. I seem to remember OPG starting to offer these but I am unsure. The bottom floor boot ring was remade by Duane H. on this Board in a small run. I had one made independently. The consolette rings are being considered for repros by John kemper on this Board. Otherwise I think used is all that is available.

Paul, you might also want to do a search here on the board. This subject has been discussed before and everytime I think I remember all the parts involved I get reminded of 20 things I forgot :Dou: You might also want to search on the hump issue. My original manual tranny car doesn't have a hump that's anything like some of the other A body humps :TU: .

Thanks for the comments, ideas.

Just starting to gather parts for conversion next winter. I still have a long list to fill.

So far have the trans. flywheel, bell housing, pedals & Z Bar.

Would be interested in any used components out there. Let me know what you have.

I will be looking for the 350 set up components.
