Marco

For a car which was built August through January...
for years 1967 - 1974.

Can you please post your car year, Muncie date stamping and your body build date (on cowl tag)?

For my car...

1970 GS

Thanks! :beer

'71 car, 01D build, here's the pic. It's interesting that my VIN is stamped ever so lightly (can hardly see in pic) and that something else was overstamped, by the looks. Also, just the last six digits of the VIN. Definitely the factory tranny, unless replaced in the first six months of its life and the dealer restamped (doubtful). So, what's the date decode as, Marco?

Edit: Actually, there is a "1" stamped 2 spaces before the restamped VIN. hard to see in the pics.

Ken,

Do you have a higher resolution shot of that?
I'm wondering if they could have typo'd the VIN and had to redo it correctly. I can see what appears to be a "3" in it, and possibly and "8" further to the right.

January 27, 1971, M21, right?

Here's a tighter shot, Steve

And even tighter on just the overstamped area. Hard to tell. I think I see an 8 in there, but not sure what else.

Nice going guys....Now I will be forced to shove my big stomach under my 73 as well as my 71 to get some pics and numbers. The one in my 71 is actually the tranny out of my former 68 GS 400 4 speed car.I remember the vin numbers were stamped on my 73's tranny and it is a M21 Muncie.

Hi Marco
Here's mine from the Stage 1. I zoomed in on the other photo so the numbers may be read a bit easier. Serial # is 199361. The build date is "12". Nothing else, just "12".

I think I see a vin stamped very lightly next to the date code. :Smarty:

Can you get magnifying glass and check it closer? :Do No:

And Ken, I can see the "_1_xxxxxx", meaning I can't see the "4" & "H" surrounding the "1"(but I know it is there).

Just a comment that it does happen occasionally that a VIN will get messed up. Not so much that a VIN will have a "typo" per se but that sometimes you will get out of sequence and fill the line with engines or trans or or frames or bodies that all have the wrong VIN. Then you really have a mess on your hands because you have to work the line back and repair every vehicle by hand between when you messed up and the VIN stamp station :spank:

Marco,
There should be 2 circles cast into the 4-speed housing and on the tail shaft. Can you get me a good resolution picture of them. I can almost see them on the picture of your tranny.
Thanks.

I sure can, but please understand my GS hasn't seen the 'light of day' since April  :ball:

Are all three circles cast on the passenger side?

...at least I'm (hopefully) going to Buick Performance Weekend on Labor Saturday, so at worst, it will be a month before I can get the car out for some pictures. :3gears:

Marco,
I'm not sure which side the circles are on. I don't have any 4-speed cars left, and did not write down that information, plus the pictures I have are crap. Maybe someone else can post some pics from a trans that is not installed yet. I am gathering some info regarding date codes for a "Buildsheet" article.

Thanks.

Yes those are the circles, but I need a picture that is closer so I can read the letters/numbers easily.

Hi Duane,
I tried to zoom in but the numbers and letters don't show up very well. I can get them off the transmission tomorrow and post them if that helps.

Harvey,
Posting the info in the circles will be great, but I am gonig to need better pictures for the article. I am trying to use a picture for each type date code as my example.

There is so much info involved with date codes that this is starting to look more like the beginnings of a book.
Thanks for your help.

Matt, That picture should work just fine. I am reading CM/4-2 in the first circle and 3 dots/3 in the second circle, with an 05D body build date.
Thank you.

Matt,
Could you also post a picture of the assembly date code for your transmission. It would be stamped into the case, right next to the vin number. If I had that info, I could use your trans as an example for all the 4-speed codes. Thanks.

The more pictures I get the easier it makes my job. If you have the time I would appreciate it.

Duane,
I tried to get better pictures but seeing there's been a couple posted I won't go any further. However, if interested the left circle with the line through it has "CM" on the left side of the line and the number "2" on the right side of the line. The right circle has the number "8" plus 3 dots. Please let me know what all this means!
Cheers
Harvey

Duane, here is the picture you requested. I should mention that the circles were not on the tailshaft but on the side cover. Looks like there was something on the tailshaft but its not as clear as the others. I have included pictures of that as well.
Matt
PS let me know when you figure out what it all means.

Thanks for the pics, that should give me everything I need as far as the transmission info. I do have a question, do you have the protect-o-plate from your car?
