View Full Version : More prayers for Dad please

Hi all,
My dad needs some more prayers please....
He'll be having surgery tomorrow.
He is having a catheter placed into his abdominal cavity (peritoneal cavity) for this dialysis machine that we can bring home & hook dad up to at night, so that he can have the dialysis done while sleeping, it's called CCPD (continuous cycling paritoneal dialysis). The incison takes about 2-3 weeks to heal completely, and they will be training dad & mom on the machine, my brother & I will also learn the basics. After he is healed and is trained, he and the machine will be allowed to come home - about a month (happy happy joy joy  ). The shunt in his arm now will remain there in case something goes wrong.
The main thing the doctors are worried about is the chance of peritonitis..... if dad happens to get it...in his weak state.... he could.....well I don't want to go there :ball: They are also not sure how much longer he has... :ball: :ball: so with this machine he can be home with the family where he should be, wants to be & where he will be the happiest.
As most of you know he's been in the nursing home since he fell back in May, he was getting better, walking, doing rehad, but took a turn for the worst when he fell again and messed up his shoulder.
The nursing home sucks big time.... only giving him a 900 calorie diet, he can't go outside (they have called him litter while waiting outside for my mom :af: ) there are no activites for him to get involved in, so with all of that......
My dad is not the same man he was when he went in, which I'm having a hard time with..... he didn't know who I was when I first walked in to see him the other day. :( :( took him about 5mins to figure it out.
So if y'all wonderful folks could add dad to your prayer list I would be greatful.
Thanks,
Beth
P.S. I have been informed NOT to change our plans for Salem.
Dad told mom....."you tell that daughter of ours to go have fun & race"

Just a quick update... I'm to lazy to edit my post LOL
Dad's surgery is have moved to Thursday......
Now for a bit of good news....
Since the surgery is not until Thursday & he was already signed out of the nursing home..... guess where he is.........
That's right he's HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I watched him make a big ol' turkey sandwich after we got him in the house & settled. He had the biggest grin on his face and just kept saying how wonderful it was to be home. He'll be home until Thursday after dialysis, then I guess they will take him for the surgery.... not sure.
Thanks all,
Beth

Hey All,
Dad had his surgery on Thursday everything went well with 1 minor thing, where the tube for the new dialysis machine is, is right where his belt buckel sits, so I guess he'll have to switch to suspenders.
He's home resting, he's very weak. He has to sleep sitting up because he has a hard time breathing when he lays down.
They are waiting the full 2 weeks for him to heal before they start his training, the doctors are very worried about his chance of infection.
His spirits are up, but not as much as I had hoped for...
I know he's getting tired... :(

Prayers lifted up.
I have an idea of what you are going through; my Dad has been up and down for a couple years now. His back is messed up (he's been "back halfed" twice already) and he's got an elbow that won't heal which is preventing a third back surgery....
Well, enough about that. Hang in there!

Keith, your dad is in my prayers also.
A quick update...
Dad has had some set backs, 1) the stupid doctor put the tube in the wrong spot. 2) the stupid doctor used the wrong tubing, so if dad would have hooked himself up to the machine, he would leak fluids all over... and, we will NOT be paying that doctors bill & he knows it..3) Dad got an infection in his arm - from a needle used to draw blood, to make matters worst, it's the same arm he injured when he fell in the nursing home and the same arm he has his regular dialysis shunt in. The incision is still weeping a bit and had slight signs of infection.
They were going to do surgery again on dad, but the decided not to, some how they switched the tubing without cutting dad again, which to me is a good thing, not sure dad could handle being knocked out again.
He is home, his spirits seem to be getting better, but he is still very, very weak, he has completely lost use of his legs and his one "good" arm is getting weaker.
I'll be taking him to the doctor today, to get an MRI done on his "bad" arm.
Thank you all again for your thoughts & prayers.
Beth

Hey all,
I figured I should/would do a quick update.
Dad is home (again) and has the machine with him, he is not on the renial (sp?) diet anymore, so he can eat more of what he enjoys and hopefully put on some weight.
He had to go back to the hospital to have his shunt removed, they wanted it to stay in but he got such a bad infection in his arm it had to come out.
They picked up a hoist of sorts to get dad in & out of bed and in & out of his wheelchair, which makes it easier on mom.
Oh and we found them a van... it's a.........yikes... Dodge... :Dou: BUT... it has a wheelchair ramp, lift & lock downs, so it's perfect for what they need.
Thanks again for all the prayers, they help lots.
Beth

Thanks again all for the thoughts & prayers...
I got a call about lunch time yesterday... Dad's back in the hospital this time in ICU :(
He was having trouble breathing and his body just started to puff up... I'm starting to not like this new machine, they just can't seem to get it programed right. Instead of it leaving 500ml in him the machine took out 500 and left in approx. 2000 in him... that's NOT good. All of the toxins were still in him, and because of that his carbon minoxide (I can't spell) level in his blood was sky high & cause him to see & hear things that were not there.
His blood sugar level was also 1500 at one point yesterday, the lowest they had gotten it was 600...those numbers are way to high...but they say that is from this mega infection in his arm.
They did some tests last night & one came back showing a blood clot in his lungs, but dad's nurse told mom & I that sometimes that test shows a false postivie so they took him for a chest cat scan. I came home as they took dad down to do the test, so I'm not sure what it showed.
Please keep prayin' for dad.

I can't begin to say how much all of your support and prayers have meant to me and my family. I thank you all so very much.
We got the call this morning that it was time to come to the hospital.
Dad went with God at 1:30pm this afternoon.
Mom, Jim (Big bro) & I were there with him. We each got to spend alone time with him to say our goodbyes in our own way.
My brother & I had gone downstairs to try and get something for mom to eat... dad waited for us to get back. I was holding his hand when the time came for him. It was quick and painless. He is no longer in pain.
My mom, bro & I decided he was running up to & kicking the pearly gates open and having a wonderful meal of cornedbeef & cabbage, a true Irishman's finest reward...
I will miss you terribly Dad... and I love you.
Beth... your little pumpkin

A Psalm of David
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in pastures of tender grass: he leads me beside the waters of quietness. He restores my soul: he leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil, for You are with me. Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil, and my cup runs over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Some people think that we car people are just a bunch of people that are just concerned about our cars, but after reading all the wonderful things writtem about Beth's Dad . it seems to me we are a very close family that cares about one and all. Sure a different world of people than what most think of us. Maybe I'm wrong but it's my thoughts and feelings about the car people on this board.
