Can I tell the GSX I'm looking at is for real by the VIN# or some code on cowl tag?

Vin # its self wont tell you but last 6 of vin should be between 219000 to 337000. You want to see a QQ paint code or a 10/10 for white but white was standard on other skylark models . You will see 188 trim code . Feb O2D to June O6B build dates and and fisher body 180000 to 285000. This is for 70's 71-2 were special order cars and harder to verify.

This might help. It's directly from the GSX registry page.
Items to look for to help determine if it is a real 1970 GSX or not.
1. Paperwork is always the first option. Ask the owner for original bill of sale, Protect-o-plate, body production sheet (usually found on the gas tank), Broadcast sheet (usually found in the drivers side pillar tucked up under the dash pad), or any other identifying paperwork.
2. The stripes down the side of the car had a small miss match directly above the rear wheel well.
3. The stripes toe in at the front edge of the hood.
4. There is one weep hole in the rear spoiler.
5. There are holes cut into the trunk lid to place the bolts for the rear spoiler.
6. There are holes drilled in the front part of the frame to mount the front spoiler.
7. There is and X stamped into the support plate of the Sports mirrors.
8. The body plate on the Cowl should have exterior paint as either Q-Q for Saturn Yellow or 10-10 for Apollo White. The Saturn Yellow color is unique to this car the Apollo White is not.
9. There should be a 3 inch hole for the hood tach or have a hood tach.
10. The dash pad emblem says GSX.
12. There is a quarter panel decal on each side of the car.
13. The trunk tension bar was slightly bigger then the standard car (needs to be checked with a micrometer).
14. The steering wheel is padded.
If all this is correct and the VIN's and paint codes are right you are one lucky guy :beer

If there is a build sheet- you can also verify it's a GSX. Without a Build Sheet or other original paperwork, Wayne Roberts is the only way to go. Pretty much everything else can be faked (especially with a 10 10 car). It takes Wayne some time to research though. Do a search on Wayne on this site and I'm sure you'll find his contact number.
Good luck.

If you are spending the money for a real GSX and the owner has no paperwork, why not get the Wayne Roberts documentation first before buying the car.
You'd most likely do that anyway after you bought the car! Paul

I agree Paul. Time is the only concern. With a sizeable deposit, perhaps the owner will wait. This is definitely the safest way for him to go.

If imported into Canada, GM will definitely have documentation. Look for the Y41 UPC code.

Best of luck and please post some pics when you get a chance.

Please consider registering this car with both myself (stage1 registry) and Mark macoubrie, who maintains the GSX registry ( www.buickgsx.net ).
If you could, please scan and email the import sheet - marco@stage1registry.com
Thanks!

Hi Marco,
As I do not own the car yet (not sure if I'll buy either)isn't it pointless to register it?
According to option list Iput above, is it a rare option combo GSX or just like all other GSX's, it's a white car, what's the brakedown yellow vs white and also stge 1 vs non stge 1 GSX's?

I don't believe it's pointless, as the car hasn't been scrapped. It should be registered as it 'still survives'
Check out Marks GSX website - www.buickgsx.net for all the production information we currently know about.
Thanks again!

Sounds just like my dad's car. I think the # is around 187 for all White X's (Much rarer than yellow). A Stage 1 10 10 car is theoretically the most desirable combo.
If the price is reasonable, I would grab it (matching drivetrain or not).

Eric

Please register the car. The numbers are 187 of 678 where white which means about 1/4 of the GSX's where white. 400 of the GSX's had Stage-1 engines. Please register this car if you have the information on it. Please send me a copy of the information from GM Canada. I will split the cost you needed to pay.
