View Full Version : 1972 Sales Code Information Needed
Marco

Does anyone know what sales codes 1 thru 9 mean on 1972 vehicles. No description is contained on either of the 1972 order forms I have, yet some cars have data here. I would guess they were used for trailer hitches, spoilers, reclining seats, and other things not normally ordered on the everyday car.
Can anyone help? Does anyone have this information for any other years besides 1972?
TIA

Okay, I think this can be covered easily. Who has a 1972 assembly manual?
I looked in my 1970 assembly manual and this is what I found.
Sales Code UPC Description
12 V81 Hitch for trailer towing
13 U89 Flasher and Harness for trailer towing
14 N99 Heavy duty wheels for trailer towing
1X 12 + 13
1Z 13 + 14
The '3' sales code group is for the police package
(60 amp Delcotron, speedometer, paint, etc)
The '6' sales code group is for exports
KPH speedometer, delete certificate of compliance
8W Y50 Protection Spray and Export Preparation
99 T74 Export Dual Headlamps - left rule of Road
Can someone with a 1972 assembly manual copy a couple pages for me, or post this information here?
Many thanks in advance!

Marco,
I just saw your post and looked in my 72 assembly manual and in another original Buick Information booklet I have and neither shows any sales codes for numbers 1-9. The lowest number shown is # 12 and is for trailer hitch, like the 70 #'s.
The info booklet is dated July 30, 1971, the Assembly Manual is dated January 25, 1971. Both these would be good for the early 72 cars.
Hope I could help you more.

Thanks Duane! Always good to talk with you. Here's what we came up with -
The '1's where for trailer hitch stuff No '2's were found in his assembly manual The '3's where for special GM paint/trim, similar to Jude's 1970 stratomist Stage1 convertible or buckets in a convertible The '4's where for special trim (GSX options/stripes/spoilers, suncoupe, police package) No '5's were found The '6's thru '9's were for export.
To clear things up (I was not very specific in my request), the '1' sales codes are sales codes which range from 11 through 19 and 1A through 1Z. The same pattern with all the numbers.
I guess I could have revised the request and asked for all sales codes which start with a numeric. Sorry for the initial confusion. I was wotking off the microfiche info that Sloan provides that lists options 'A' thru 'Z', and '1' through '9' (A1 for Stage1, I6 for A/C, X2 for rallye steering wheel, etc...)
Thanks!

I have a sheet from Sloan that Came with the car when I bought it in Oct 02. The Accessories and Options sections reads a-z*1-9, with a letter or number meaning an option. Maybe Sloan has made a mistake. But if anyone knows what section 2 of the 1-9 options, with the number 4 in the box under the 2. I would appreciate any info here.
Thanks for all of the help on this and all of my question!

Fred,
If you use the above posted order form as a reference you can read the options right off it. (All except the LA option code.)

Fred,
I started looking at the Codes Sloan gave you and saw something. Your original Order form has a date in the lower left corner of "H-72". This is the original form. If you look at the form sloan gave you it probably is "H-72-1" which is the "Revision #1" form. If you look at that one all the codes make sense except the "LA" code. The LA code is probably shown on the next revision "H-72-2 Revision #2" and would be soft ray tinted glass. If you don't have the rev1 form send me a copy of your original information and everything from sloan and I will list it out for you.
Thought I would let you know.

I have a 1972 Assy Manual if you need any info from it..
It doesn't have the LC sales code in it..it does have all the special number codes, though..the police models, towing hitch, special colors, etc.

Troy..
Thanks for the comment on the car. What color is yours..? Is it Orange, also..? It looks sharp!
I couldn't find any codes beginning with 2...if that was your question.
There is a 42..which is a police speedometer..but no 2's
Do I have your question right..?

Yes, Stanley, you have the question correct.
Sloan documented Troy's GS with a '24' sales code that is currently a mystery to us all...
It's possibly a mistake, or the 'Buick people' just wanted to create some confusion 30 years later  :puzzled:

Maroc, Troy..
Here is the dumb question of the day:
Is there anything unusual about the car that might give us a hint at what '24' could have meant..?
An odd combo of options not seen before, etc.?
I'm sure this is an old thought to you..but I was curious.

I don't really have any specific ideas.. But,
I have been talking to people about getting new rubber for the back bumper, you know, around the license plate area.
I have been told that the rear bumper "pusher" is a dealer add on. So that could be something.
Or, my car does have a front spoiler, probably not original, but just a thought.
Or, I have also heard that the dome light packages were different.
Mine are on the earmuff boards, nothing in the ceiling.
Or, I could stir things up on the board again, and my car was ordered with a skylark grill vs blacked out GS???:Dou:
Thanks again!

Hi Troy
N5 is the sales code for the bumper guards.
The spoiler would have a sales code starting with a '4' (I don't have my reference material in front of me).
Dome light in the sail panels - custom interior. Dome light in the center of the headliner - standard interior.
We'll keep on looking.
PS - when would you like to register your GS? It takes only a few moments using the internet form (on my website) and your Sloan documentation.

Hi..
I was re-checking my Sloan data..and besides having the mysterious LC code..my car was ordered with a DC code..Sonomatic AM radio and rear speaker...in a convertible.
So, where does/did the rear speaker go..??
I have no trace that I can tell of a factory rear speaker in this car.
Or is this another Buick/Sloan funny for us never to understand..?

Hi Stanley -
I've seen the holes for the speaker (and also the screws) in the support/bracing for the back seat, behind the convertible top well.
How do the 'muffled' speakers sound??? :Do No:

Marco..
The car came with..listen to this, you'll love it!...an upgraded radio, circa 1975...it was a manual tune, 8 track player..an innovation the owner also made was to add 5" speakers in the side panels in the rear. They also hooked the radio up to the factory front speaker.
Needless to say, I removed the 'upgrade'..(got any 8 tracks..?) and substituted a more modern rig (my only concession to today's world) and replaced the side speakers with new ones..and replaced the wiring. I left the fcatory front speaker in place, but not used. I am considering those kick panels with speakers built in..know anything about them..?
Anyway, I have never looked for a rear speaker..since I didn't know I might have one..since it is hidden!
How do you access the bracing area you speak of..? Can you see it from the trunk? What do you have to disaasmble?
I am intrigued, now..maybe a build sheet will pop out, too
High hopes,
Stanley

Very interesting story :TU:
You can see the bracing area from the trunk. With the top up, just lift the well and you should be able to see the spots for the speakers.
Let us know how you make out.
Even more interesting, some of these convertibles came with a 'rear window defogger'. I'd really like to see one of those in person, to see how it's setup.

Ok..
I am going to be away for the next week and then won't be with the car (it lives in Maine) until the 1st weekend in May.
So, I'll report back on the speakers after then..
And no, I know I don't have a rear defogger..I did in my 'original' sport coupe..one of those fan units that blew air around..but not in this car. Sounds strange in a convertible.
Regards, Talk to you in while.

Marco,
I have a factory rear window defogger in my 70 442 Convertible. It is out of the car, so I will bring it to the Region 1 picknick. It is identical to the buick units. I may have some drawings in the 70 olds assembly manual, I will check.
My 70 Chevelle Convertible has a rear speaker. It came with a metal speaker cover that mounts in the well liner behind the rear seat.

Hi
All good things happen with time.
I just saw this on e-bay (Where else??)
http://cgi.aol.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2414286579&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:MT:1
Not sure exactly where it would mount in the car..but it exists.
Perhaps it bolts behind the rear seat and pops up through the convertible trunl liner..?
Marco..what do you think?
Stanley
