Muncie M-21 guts inside the fiero tranny... True???

I just had a VERY knowledgable friend tell me that the GM 4 speed found in the pontiac fiero, as well as all FWD J-bodies was manufactured my muncie, and is infact an M-21 design modded for FWD application.

He also told me the guts are exactly the same and will swap out into a RWD muncie case... Any truth to this rumor?
