View Full Version : What headers fit with a Muncie?

In the course of pursuing my 4-speed conversion, I have come across a stumbling block. I have discovered that the location for the cross member with a TH-400 needs to move forward about 6 1/2 inches to be where it needs to be for my Muncie M-21. This puts it right where the collectors on my headers bolt to the head pipes. So this won't work. Does anyone know what headers would work? I'd like to stay with competition style headers. Hooker lists a pair, but I don't know if they take this situation into account or are just thinking about clutch linkage clearance. This is for a '68 GS400.

Running shorties on mine. Ever get that Z-bar bracket fixed?

I figured shorties would probably work. What did you do about the pipe from the header? Did you fabricate that yourself or what? I was hoping there would be a comp. version that would work, but it may not matter anyway. This header situation may be a show stopper. There's only so much money to throw at this thing and I'm pretty over budget already. I certainly didn't anticipate having to replace my headers which are perfectly good and were just ceramic coated a little over a year ago.
I haven't done anything about the bracket yet. I'm trying to find and resolve issues like these before I get too far down the road. But if I do continue, I will probably have to make the bracket unless I can come up with one from a bone yard.

Exhaust isn't done yet (except headers) but I'm using TA's pipe

I had to do a little cutting on my crossmember as the header collector flange
conflicted with it. This is with M/T headers.

Greg,
Is M/T a brand? Do you have any pictures of what you did?

I run Mickey Thompsons M/T's on one of my cars(455 4-speed muncie). It is tight but it works.

Tom, "operation 4 speed is underway" post #31 shows the modified crossmember and the drivers side header collector.
Reg, tight but worth it :TU:

Thanks, Greg. I should have looked there first. I see one difference in my situation and that is the location of the collector bolts. I have one that is straight up (12:00 o'clock) so that really creates a problem. Yours are in the best possible positions (10:00 & 2:00). I don't know how much I can modify my cross member before I start compromising its strength. I guess I need to unbolt it and position it in the forward-most holes and see exactly where it is relative to the collector. From there I can determine how much modification would be required.
Where did you guys get these M/T headers? I looked them up and seems they are only done custom.
