I am pretty sure you can use the oil filter adapter off a later motor and convert to a common spin on type filter. Some point straight down like your cannister, others forward at about 45 degrees.

I put an adaptor on that I bought on ebay for $50
that lets you use a modern spin on filter like a fram F11.
Works great and I believe it's a much better filter than those
old nasty cannister type. I found it by doing a parts search for
55 and/or 56 Buick parts. Uses existing housing with a plate and
dual threaded hollow piece. A little tricky to install but worth it.

I saw those spin on adapters and i may have one laying around from when i converted my old 66 impala. I just checked that website and it appears my old chevy adapter wont work. But i still plan on getting one of them.
. As always this board comes through. Our napa store claims they don't have the cannister style.
