hello, I have a 1955 buick special, with a 264 and a dynaflow transmission. I am having trouble, the car does not want to move like its supposed to when I put it in gear, (D L and R) most of the time. it takes off very slowly, forcing me to take off in L most of the time
( even though L does not even work as it should also). sometimes i can hear a clunking noise and then it will work properly. but most of the time it will not. I have had a new transmission mount and thrustpad put in.
any help would be good. thanks.

From what Ive heard the old dynaflows had alot of these types of slow start/slip problems. Alot of people(myself included) opt for a swap. To a more modern type tranny TH350 etc. Not an easy job mind you I've been working on my 54' since January. along with the trans swap the rear goes with it which allows you to update the suspension and adjust the ride height.
Just one way to go!
Best of luck :TU:

If i remember reading correctly, the dynaflows trans bands were adjustable for slipage. The factory repair manual had the prcedure for adjusting them. though i could be wrong. Mgiht want to find the oldest tranns shop with the oldest employee and see whathe(or she) reccomends. I know that i had to get closer to Chicago before i found a tranny joint that would rebuild one.
Also, is this your first time with the dynaflow cuz iknow i thought i had major power issues but after a few old timers drove her, the said that was how they remembered them. Just slooooooowwwwwww and smmmooooooooth..
hope i helped chad
p.s. a 150 horsepower doesn't do much in a 4000lb car. Hell, they need a 3:55 rear gear just to get em rollin.

I agree that they should be smooth and slow but you should be able to spin the tires in low gear.
If you get a clunk noise then it works ok, I would say the trans needs help. It may be a band that needs much adjusting or something more serious.
Check your fluid level and color/condition. It should be red/pink but not brown and stink like burnt.
Does the engine RPM pick up but the car does not move quickly (slipping trans) or does it ust not have any power.
Also, check your pressure rod/switch pitch/twin turbine adjustment. I forgot to hook up/adjust one on my pop's 61 LeSabre and it was a dog off the line.
