I am a big fan of the 1966 to '67 Buick Riviera and plan on purchasing one as my next. I would like some general information on the car. I am familiar with Camaros, Corvettes, Mustangs, Mustangs, Firebirds, and GTOs, but not these period Buicks. Their beauty has fascinated me since I was a high schooler.

Maybe you should check the Riviera Forum, there you will find quite a few articles about these model years in the "Riviera Literature" section.

I know what you mean about the design. They're like a concept car that somehow accidentally went into production. I've had three. Two 66GS Rivs, one with the 2X4 super wildcat, and a 67GS 430 with the star wars air cleaner.
I'm not sure where to begin or what to say about them exactly. Great ride, quick acceleration, not so nimble but don't handle too bad for as big as they are. One thing I'd want is either the deluxe interior with the notch back (arm rest) or bucket seats with console. Actually I think the notch back with arm rest is the most comfortable.
Stay away from rust buckets, there are plenty of solid ones around. Also, they're not real popular (go figure?) so you will be able to find one in top condition and still be well under $10K for it.
The spinning barrel speedo is a real trip. If you can turn it all the way around back to zero you'll be doing 150MPH. Personally, I've never pushed one over 135. Had a front tire blow out at 75 once, that was exciting.
Incidentally, 1966 was last year for the nailhead 425 engine, and 1967 was first year for the 430. Both good engines. 1966 has a single well master brake cylinder and I've had total brake failure in a 66. The 67 has duals so that's not likely to happen. Outside that, I can't think of much difference between the two.
