thanks ....I knew something went back there ...bcs the last time (20 years ago) I changed a spindle it had some kind of seal/gasket thingy... all the places that I was investigating/pricing spindle kits with the caliper bracket and shield never mention or offer this .....I wonder if they know... where do you think I can find this seal ....?? time to take the shield and bracket off for me .. ................ I just called Ground up where I ordered them from ... and they know nothing of such part .....ou: also called another place that offers the whole kit and the fella told me he knew what I was talking about and that nobody offers that in the kit and that its not critical...nobody uses em ... and just "slap it together" according to him...o No: o No: o No: I'm guessing its only purpose is for a non metal to metal contact and maybe vibration ...o No: o No: I have to take apart my original rusty spindle apart and see whats behind the plate...see if I can make or match something up
heres what someone told me the purpose of the seal is ...seems its kind of important in the long run ...seems there hard to find new...I might make one.. "Yes vibration and corrosion caused by dissimilar metals in contact...(galvanic reaction I think is what it is called)."
page 16 - 17 part # 8A http://1964-77chevelleparts.com/catalogPDFs/A2 05 brakes.pdf Try a Chevy dealer first. Some may still have them. Stopped stocking them in '85
Frank, It looks like felt. If you have a Michaels arts store in your area, they have a 8x10 with a adhesive backing on it. I coated the piece I cut out with a waterproof sealer and it looks very close to the original. Who needs a vibration noise in the front end?
Bill ..thanks much that was useful....I called 2 chevy dealers yesterday and I mentioned early 1970's and they brushed me off..... Rick ...thats what I was thinking maybe make it out of some gasket material heres one that was intact from my original spindle set ....the other side was brittle and disintegrated as I was trying to take off ... easy to replicate ,,,,just the exact material ....I will give a few more close dealers a a shot ...
bingo.....GM part # 15699959 darn ...they have em ...I was gonna make em and become a millionaire on ebay
where did you get em ....? bcs I called up 3 places that sell the spindle kits and none offered or knew what they were..
^ then they know their stuff ....others didn't/don't know I should of used em ... anyways I have a pack of 10 coming from a chevy dealer 10 miles out ...only dealer that has em in the area....
well I went and picked em up ....and they do seem to be made like felt material ..Rick was on the ball here.. they could be easily made with felt now I can sleep good at night and get the darn discs on ..... I have a few extra... anybody need just holler
about 80 cents each .... you should of hoarded them and become rich on ebay ... make more on shipping thing ...
is that part supposed to be greased? i would think the felt would hold water and that appears to be a place where water could be bad.
Frank Yea I need two, I am in the middle of a frame-off restoration on my 71 GS350 with 4 speed. I could send cash in the mail or paypal if you like. George
