New to this site and new to the pure stock drags. Thinking bout getting my 70 duster 340 legal for this race. Can i use the kb243 piston as a replacement? Kb's website says it's an oe replacement and the comp. height is the same. Lookin forward to chatting with you all about this class. :3gears:
The reference material used for P/S is the NHRA stock class engine blue print minimums. They list replacement pistons for a '70 340 as: TRW L2316F SEALED POWER 2332P CHILDS & ALBERT P1610 VENOLIA 275-340 BADGER B284 JE 136627 ROSS 55328 CP PISTONS M8-CP DIAMOND 68-71 340 The reference weight listed is 672 grams piston and 90 grams pin with a 1.815 compression height. Now, can you run the Kb......well if the piston face is the same design and the weight is there yes. My experience with Kb (I have them in my 427) is they are much, much heavier than stock, but readily available and cost effective.
Welcome to the mania of the Pure Stocks. Another one west of the Mississippi!!! Where in Iowa? Put it in top gear and get it ready for the St. Louis event. If Frank views you as a friend, I think we are all in trouble.ou:
Yeah I'm new to the stockers alright...but I've been drag racing for almost 20 years now and I've had some pretty nasty mopars. I do like the more level playing field of psmcdr though. Gonna look at those nhra specs with a new light. My personal challenge is to put together one of the fastest 340 A bodys. Time will tell and I'll probably do as Frank says and just spectate a race or two first to scope out what other cars are like and how they are performing. I like stock type muscle more now than ever. It used to be that I just had to win win win, but I know that those vettes, sixpacks and the like are gonna be outta my league. I wanna try some of those small block copos and 302 z28's and such. :3gears:
Welcome and I hope you can come out and enjoy the racing. I have KB's in my Challenger T/A and they were heavier than the stock pistons as Brian suggested. The car had the motor rebuilt from Friday to Sunday (maching and everything) and we had it to Scott's to certify it on Tuesday. It cert'd and at the time it set the fastest small block Mopar pass ever which I think was superceeded this season. We forgot to cut the intake and it was off by about an 1/8th off an inch. That was the first time I ever drove the car. It is now a bit faster and I am happy with the KB's. We needed pistons overnight and KB was the only brand available to us at that moment. Run them and have fun. Mark
What kind of times are you gettin with an e body? What gear and is it an auto? Do you know what it scales at.... sounds cool...is it runnin six pack?
It is an auto, 4.33 gears, 3717 lbs, and it does still have the factory six pack on it. Back then it went a best at 13.504@103.64 during qualifing. Since that time I fixed the intake issue and a few other minor items. Now it will run under that time but only by a couple tenths or so. The car has very little compression. It is 10.13:1. I am sure with more compression it could go even quicker but really an E body is not as good a race car with the small block as a Duster or Dart. If I were to really try to build a fast 340 car I think your A body has a serious head start. My car was a show car that won the Mopar Nats T/A-AAR class then the following year the Senior class, several concours, Mopar's at the strip, Carlisle and vacationed at Floyds place. The racing came about because that is what I prefer but the car was never properly setup to do so. None of the engine specs were pressed towards the NHRA limits in the least. Mark
Tom Cannon has a very F.A.S.T. small block Mopar. At least I think it's a small block. Benoit's red Vette is the all time fastest small block yet (12.50's I think) but he's taking it to the F.A.S.T. level and going after some of the big boys. Probably never dip intothe 10's, but bet he'll get close. Whatever, he's always fun to watch.....once enough smoke form the melted tires clears enough to see it. MIller's building something out there (what's new?) and even though Casey's W31 is gone to the fluff and puff, show and cruise circuit, someday we may go back into mine and figure out what's wrong with it. It ran a best of 13.30 at 104.5 at Stanton a few years back before we tried to get cute and go for the 12's and started 3 years of terror with bad cams/lifters or both. Small block driving is fun, too, but very tricky with the 4 speed cars. Fine line between the spinning and the bog. Sliding the clutch and keeping the R's way up is about the only way to do it, even with the 4.56 gear. Wish all tracks hooked like Norwalk. Sub 2.0's were not difficult and I even had a 1.90 one time wiht a 5000 RPM hard launch. Can't do that anywhere else.
I'm not so sure the A bodys have a big advantage. The T/A and AAR had quite a bit more tire and WAY more induction. Time will tell as I'm a 340 nut and think I can at least compete well. I know all to well that the four speed is going to be a gig hurdle, but it is old school and that is the way I roll.
The T/A's have more induction then they can use and weight several hundred pounds more. If you run a '71 Duster you get the Carter carb which is more than enough also plus the weight advantage. I think your A body will do well. Mark
I was real shocked when I scaled my duster a while back. I was in it and it was 3515. That was with about 3/4 tank fuel and aluminum slot wheels. It is a man steering man brake four speed car without a/c. I'd add 200 pounds to the car for a 60 series tire and 1200 cfm. There is alot of tuning available in those carbs!!
Hey 3404spd,last year i ran a 340,4spd Duster non-AC in PS,went 14.20's @ 98mph with 4.56's,way to much gear,it crapped out at about 3/4 track,with the 391's it could have dropped 2 or 3 tenth's.Were you at in Iowa?
I live in west liberty and my car is a factory 3.91, which I thought would be about perfect with those 25" tall tires. What cams are you guys running, or should I say, able to run without the red flag sound?
Frank Remilinger's 69 340 GTS weighed in at 3510 and Chris Moorehead 69 340 Swinger wieghed 3485.........
NHRA shows a 70 Duster weighs 3110, so adding a 200 pound driver that comes to 3310. That means there's about 200 pounds of extra "stuff" somewhere on those cars, or about 2 10th's if you're talking in drag racing terms. :Brow:
