How can I tell if this 65 wildcat has a posi? I did a search and read that if you jack it up and spin one tire and the other tire spins the same direction then it is a posi, But I have done this with my electra and it is definitly a posi and the tires spun in opposite directions.Anyway easy way to tell on my 65 wildcat? And what kind of money would a 65 posi bring?
burnout on both tires is not necessarily definitive that u have a posi. of course the only way to be certain is to remove the pot cover and look. or perhaps your posi is wearing out.
If you jack it up and the other tire spins the opposite direction then it's a posi. Usually with an open rear if you jack it up and spin, turn one and the other won't do anything at all. Easy way to know for sure is find a little dirt or a dirty road and spin them up a little. They both will spin if it's a posi.
Actually, I believe they both spin in the same direction with a posi. I don't know how reliable that test is though. If you look in a Buick Chassis Service manual, it states that if in doubt, perform this test. 1) Place transmission in neutral 2) Raise one wheel off of the floor, and place a block of wood in front and rear of opposite wheel. 3) Install a torque wrench on a lug nut of the raised wheel. 4) Disregarding breakaway torque, measure the torque to keep the wheel turning continuously. If it is a posi, the torque will be at least 30 ft.lbs.
my GN's rear tires would spin in the same direction and it certainly wasn't a spool or a locker.. just the plane jane stock posi unit
Ok, but why does my electra burn both tires everytime but if I jack it up and spin one tire the other tire spins in the opposite direction?
The service manual shows there is an external marking. I believe it is on the bottom side of the differential (ie. under the car laying on your back looking up). From what I recall it is supposed to be a small X inside a circle. There are pictures in the service manual. Unfortunately with the '65 there is no cover. The whole diff has to come out to see for sure. Rick
