was the OHC engine ever offered on a legitimate GTO optioned chassis?? specifically, 1968 with a 4 speed?
Pontiac literature I have seen would suggest the answer is no, but GM was more flexible back then with special orders. You might ask the question here: http://forums.performanceyears.com/forums/ John:beer
I know where a 66 Sprint is....I would LOVE to have that car but this guy knows what he has and will take it to his grave.....here is a link to some history of these cars http://www.cardomain.com/ride/658053
I had a 67 Sprint optioned LeMans. It was only available on that and Firebird, not GTO. GTO were the 400 cu in engined LeMans body. The Sprint package included specific springs and other components, different from GTO and regular LeMans and Customs. I wish I could find one for they were limited production. It handled well due to lighter six with aluminium heads. Specific springs and other components helped and I added ADDCO sway bar to reduce body lean on turns. 4 speed made use of high reving six HP.
I don't know about a GTO but it did come in a T37 (with a 4bbl carb) which is almost a GTO\Lemons. Mike
The OHC was available on the A-body from 1966-69, from the Tempest all the way up to the LeMans. The 4bbl.-equipped cars are Sprints, which are really obscure from 1968-69. The GTO always was a 389/400/455 car except for the 1974s. Sprints came with side stripes standard on the coupes, although they could be deleted. Sedans didn't come with stripes but they had badges.
One of the best things DeLorean ever did. We raced a 66 Tempest back in 1966 at York and other western Pa tracks. Went high 12's @ 100mph. I built a header for it with a square collector, those were "in Vogue" then. 5.13's 7" tires, The sound would break eardrums 1/2 mile away! Guy who owned it left @ 7000, shifted @ 7500. Sounded like a whole nest of angry Bumble Bee's . Never broke. Fun car.:TU:
For you Pontiac fans, here's a nice 1966 Lemans Sprint that's going across the block at Mecum this weekend. http://cgi.liveauctions.ebay.com/ws...STRK:MEWA:IT&viewitem=&item=230294307350&rd=1 I always liked these cars. Pretty hard to find nowadays. Most have been converted to GTO's, with full documentation of course.
I have been watching this one for a couple weeks...too rich for my blood:TU: I just missed one locally here last week and waiting for it to show up again.
Are these legal for Pure Stock? What do you think a properly-prepped, stripped-down Firebird could do? Hmmm....
They're rated at 215 horsepower and they were available in 67 Firebirds. NHRA shows they have a 3010 pound shipping weight. No reason why they shouldn't be legal for PSMCDR. They came with 4 barrel carburetor and dual exhaust, 4 speed and probably had factory traction bars too. Check this link, about half way down the page. Questions about 67 posi rears. It shows 67 Sprint 4 speed cars had two traction bars. http://firstgenfirebird.org/FAQ/wheel_brake_axle/axles.html I'd like to see and hear one of those "mean buzzin half dozen" cars run too. :Brow:
I asked about one of these cars a while back, and there was a reason it got shot down, but I can't remember what it was at the moment? Are you sure they came with dual exhaust? The reason I asked is there was a mechanic in town that had a *mint* OHC car, that he was basically gonna give away...
The exhaust manifolds looked like little cast iron headers, with two outlets. Sort of look like Terrys L-88 Vette exh. manifolds. I just did a quick check on E-bay and they show a Y-pipe from the header/manifolds to a single exhaust system on 68 and 69's. Maybe it was the same deal on 67's and that was why they turned you down. o No:
I have been in the market for a Tempest Sprint 4 speed model for some time, one slipped through my fingers last month. Please keep me in mind when a decent specimen is available....not the Mechum one either:rant:
Maybe, would out run most small 8's in street trim. The reason it's not legal for PSMCDR is that it's a six, they want V8's. I think they ought to make an exception for these and probably turbo Spyder Corvairs, if there's any of them left.
What year? I know I have seen a 68/9 that was at a few shows last month if I remember right he wanted 9k. It was in pretty good shape, I know I was in awe you just don't see many of them.
