Flame Orange is a cool color. Any picture will not do justice. There is a very fine metalflake in it. Out of direct light it looks like a flat orange. In direct sunlight it is very bright due to the metallic. Very attractive color. The color code is 65. -Mike
I would say yes. Maybe make a call to your local paint supplier and ask. I cannot remember exactly what we used on my car. I think it may have been a DuPont product. -Mike
My parts book lists the Dupont number as 927-AF403 and the Ditzler number as 2450. Here's a link to a paint chip chart.
Both R-M and Glasurit have a formula for it. The number is WA4240 or 2564. Usually R-M or DuPont has the best color match on the old cars. If you are interested, we can do a sprayout with R-M and mail it to you.
my car was originally flame orange with black vinyl top. the car was repainted silver mist and the fire red. i am currently having it sanded to bare metal and repainted fire red again. personally, i am not a flame orange lover in a hardtop or sedan but timr's 72 ragtop looks great in that colour.
Hi Gerry, well thanks but you don't have to be nice just because you think I might read this!! :bla: Chris, you really need to see the color in person to "get it". Its an odd color, I think the gold metalflake is what makes it pop in the sun, yet in the shade its almost a copper color. We had paint mixed 3 times before I would accept it to spray (usually a spectogragh can be used but in my case we were trying to match a small area and I found most pre-mixed flame oranges are not even close so you need some original samples to compare). Also, don't forget your monitor and pictures have colors that can be off a fair bit. I could bore you to death with high rez pics if you send me your e-mail address...I have LOTS :beer I wasn't going to paint my car the original color, then one day my wife came home with a bottle of orange crush (WTF?)..then oranges starting sitting in our fruit basket, then cheezies..so finally I gave up... Glad I did, the color really grabs peoples attention. Pics attached, you can see what a flash does to this color, sun as well (no comments, pic was taken before final alignment, trim etc). The one thing I wasn't crazy about is the red in the emblems does not pop like it would on a white or green or black car). Love the color! Classic Hugger with lots of Class. I wish the 70 GSX had been this color instead of yellow, My opinion only!
Actually there is no gold metalflake in the color, only silver metallic. It just takes on a gold sparkle because of the orange and yellow in the color. Black with metallic is the same deal, it looks like a gold sparkle, but the brown/yellow in black is what does that.
Ok I'll buy that, however I was told by the PPG rep that it was gold metalflake in the paint. Regardless it really pops in the sun!
Tim, I never really thought I would like Flame Orange until I saw the pics of your car. I'm considering changing color on our 72 455 conv. project (originally Sunburst Yellow) to Flame Orange.
Honestly I wasn't sure myself, but between my wife buying orange stuff everywhere and my Mom (who just happens to love orange) threatening to spank me I had no choice! :laugh: Besides, that is the way the car was. People seem to really like it. I like Sunburst yellow as well, looks excellent with black top/interior (white is good too but I prefer black). Very classy....changing colors is always a loaded decision, especially on such a rare machine like yours.
Good to know. It was interesting actually, when we first ordered the color it showed up and was completely wrong, looked like bright orange or hugger orange (smelled nice though my painter said!! :eek2: ). Second try was closer but not exact and at that point the PPG guy got involved....the paint was mixed to match the original sample I had and was dead on...the rep said PPG would be updating their formula based on this but I don't know if he was just bs'ing me or whatever. Anyway, thought it was interesting. Not cheap stuff either.
no its not cheap, if you buy the good stuff, ill tell you the last time that paint code 2450 or wa4240 (oe gm code) was updated was 20/08/2004 that is rite off the ppg online colour program depending on wat kinda of ppg u went with
nice thats really good paint... i cant even get a DBC (deltron 2000) mix to come up with that code o No: never seen that before
