Update as of one year ago: points triggering MSD 6 + a MSD timing controller so I can tune on the roll.
MSD 6A and HEI with an MSD coil. Taylor 10.4mm wires. No problems in the nearly 3 years since installing. Bill
Pertronix conversion in the 71 GS (clone) 455 and stock points in the 70 Skylark 350... never had a problem with the points. I heard good things about the Pertronix system.. the idle is way better on the 455 since I converted it over. Thought maybe I would pick up a tenth or two in the quarter???
There is nothing different between the GM 8 cylinder points distributors as far as internals. I would stay away from the lobe sensing Pertronix. I've seen them leave people stranded. The one with the ring up top seems to be more reliable. This kit will fit most GM distributors including 57-74 Buicks. http://www.jegs.com/i/Pertronix/751/1181/10002/-1#
I don't like Pertronix at all, but lots of guys run them without incident. IMHO, you are better off triggering an MSD 6A(L) with the points.
I run MSD 6AL w/Taylor 409 wires 2 STEP REV control with a stock HEI set at 36 DEG Total Timming,As you can se my avaitar LOL never had an issue.
Do the points last longer just being used as a trigger for the MSD box? Also, I saw the MSD 6AL-2 on the summit racing site. What do you think about that one?
My new system Mallory 57 magnetic 22* intial 34* all in at 2500 rpm MSD 6AL chipped at 5800 Vortec/MSD boost retard box Crane clone PS91 coil Accel wire AC r42's
When the points are used to trigger the MSD box, they carry very little current, and they last a lot longer because of that. The 6AL2 is digital, so it should be good.

does using something other than stock points and coil make you go down the track faster? if so by how much? Im using stock points and coil. Cheap reliable, regular maintenance item. nice.
I would say no, especially for a stock motor. With a modified engine, a CD ignition can significantly improve drive ability, allowing you to use bigger plug gaps and keep the plugs cleaner in the process. The correct spark advance curve will DEFINITELY get you down the track quicker if you have the traction.
I suppose points could float in an engine built to shift significantly higher than 5000 RPM. Stock? Stay with points all the way.
anyone have MSD 6AL boxes just suddenly stop working on them, or would this be a very rare occurrence?
Word on the street is that it's happening more often lately. If my old 6AL ever dies (been running it for just under 20 years) I'll probably go Mallory. Devon
