Here is what I THINK is an original oil filler cap....I've had it for 25+ years. NOT. for sale. :bglasses: Wheelz, Tampa Bay
:bglasses: KOOL Wheelz......here's a pic of mine ....:idea2: it was on the car when I bought it in 1983....:bglasses: :bglasses: :bglasses:
Jim, Yes that is what the ones I get off the 88 Centuries look like however I have also seen ones out of later GM boxes that were not the same under that sticker with the correct markings but were just plain with an "S" on the center button. So no way to tell unless you take the sticker off. Kind of like playing a scratch ticket. I would guess the S is for Stant.
1625763, supposedly a corvette cap. I have not looked under the sticker. I'm afraid I will be disappointed.
Jim, Like a kid on christmas. Will it be the GI Joe with the forgman suit? (Wish I still had mine). Or the big pink bunny suit from Aunt Clara?
Here is the biggest collection you will ever see. Probably only 20% of what I had. Most of these are spoken for but one left that has gasket issue but chorme is pretty goood. The upper far left is my concourse quality. Probably will never get on a running engine. I had a friend who I gave one walk away at a show. You never know who is out there.
Here is a picture of an NOS cap that was purchased by a friend of mine before the Parts Place came out with their poor reproduction (middle pic). Notice it is 90* off from the originals in this post. I am also including a picture (courtesy of Scott Miller) showing the part number 6410394, which differs from the Parts Place ad that says 6410204. Was the part number superceded, or were they made different for different applications that caused the part number change? Never trust NOS parts unless you have an original to compare it with!!!
James is the one to the far left NOS? That is oriented like the repro? All my originals are like the NOS with the box and My originals all look better than that repro.
My master chassis parts catalog (Nov. 1973) indicates p/n 6410204 is correct Stage 1 part. My NOS cap is p/n 6410394. I suspect that some small improvement was made in the cap, which led to a superceded part number. Also shown is an old ratty cap from one of my long gone stage 1 cars from many years ago. There are some subtle differences, mainly in the stampings. Oh, and by the way, the cap in the picture in my above post was "The Pink Bunny Suit". Merry Christmas.
Yes, the far left picture shows an NOS FC65 a friend bought on ebay several years ago, but he didn't save the box so I don't know what part number it had been assigned. I am certain that The Parts Place made their reproduction based off one like it that they were given and assumed it was correct. It may be correct for other brands since it seems I remember the Pontiacs and possibly Corvettes had the tabs at 12 and 6 o'clock, which would have the lettering correct for that application.
Yes, it's painted red. I'm not sure anymore, Dave, what the correct 69 cap even looks like anymore, but I think you are right. There's only one piece of material in there and it's like some kind of dense fiber stuff, there's no way to replace it, it's all pressed together like you say. It does seem like there's not enough gasket material because when I turn it into position it just rattles around. I'm afraid it's gonna rattle right off and oil will spew out.
Ken, what part number is on top of the one you've got??..i've got a few red caps floating around here and would be happy to "pay it forward"...:TU:
Chris, that's awful kind of you. Thing is my GS is in the car jacket hibernating. o No: Maybe someone knows the proper oil cap part# for the GS 400?
Painted caps were the same for all series, all engines, 1968-1973 (except '72 350" with Air Injection Reactor). P/N 3835665. Earlier cars used this same cap but there were more specific exceptions according to the chassis parts manual.
