I specifically asked the seller if this is a restamp. His reply was "this is a Buick carb". Considering his deliberately evasive answer, and his history of selling "rare" carbs, I would say approach with caution. He knows what a Stage 1 carb is worth and it's doubtful he'd list a real one with no reserve. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190370439800&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
If you read his feedback someone posted positive feedback on a Pontiac carb, but said it was a restamp with a sloppy rebuild!
IMO If he knows carbs, he knows what you meant and why you asked specifically if it was a restamp or not. Sad thing is, it probably wont be addressed till after he sells it to somebody who thought they got a good deal. Personally, Id go a different route. .02
I notice it has a vacuum pull-off for the primaries. Is this correct for a 1970? I know the carbs up until 69 only had the choke pull-off on the secondaries. I thought they didn't start with the dual pull-offs until later in the seventies. Any ideas??
I think there is a good chance it is real and not a re-stamp. The carb obviously has not been rebuilt for a long time, with that said, it doesn't mean that he did not take the bowl off, mill the #'s and the re-stamp & re-assemble. o No:
Agreed. I looked at some of his other carbs and the machining marks are clearly visible and he won't state that his carbs are not restamps. What are the odds that this guy just happens to find all these rare carbs at swap meets? A couple of his other buyers figured out that they were scammed: Restamp sold as real offered refund never sent after many emails, crooks! Stamped # a total SCAM! Returned, no refund, reported to EBAY Trust & Security Steer clear of this shyster.
If anyone cares, did find out that Buick was putting the dual pull-offs on carbs as early as 1970. It was more like 1975 for other makes. So, this doesn't necessarily rule it in or out. Personally, it looks and smells like a restamp but who knows.
The smell didn't bother me its his Ebay Feedback thats really BAD I wouldn't buy from them.........................
Sold for $828. I was watching the auction this morning in hopes of nabbing the carb for a song. I figured with its odd ending time, and restamp questions it wouldnt do much. Go figure.
Can I ask without everyone getting up-set what the difference is between re-stamping carbs and restamping distributors? Chris
Its Ok to sell a restamped part if you tell people is restamped. Its an entirely other matter to sell a restamped carb as an original. One way your a crook, the other way your not
No diff. the restamped carbs if they have the same rods and jets there is no diff. but its hard to get the rods for a 1970 Stage-1 42-B PRIMARY rods AU SEC. rods and a J Hanger if you find AU Rods New they can cost you 35.00 a Set and 42B rods are not always Avaliable, so if it don't have the Guts its not real....
If you have to inquire as to the difference between this auction and the distributors I have sold, perhaps the answer is beyond your comprehension. For a start, you can Google the words "misrepresentation" and "conscience"...
The crook will NOT tell you upfront that the part is a re-stamp. He will obfuscate and insinuate the authenticity of the part and hope for an uninformed buyer. Just like selling a car thats supposed to be rust free. I see tham offered all the time. The seller says that ther is no rust holes ( because they are filled with bondo Its a tough world out there buyer be ware.
