i'm looking at a posi rear end on craigslist it has 308 gears i drive my car on the highway daily in the summer about 75 miles round trip and 100 miles round trip on the weekends how will the 308 rear end do under those conditions
Make sure it's exactly as advertised then go for it. You'll want to inspect first to make sure it's truly a posi, then the gear wear pattern, backlash if possible and clutch pack breakaway torque. Devon
X2 :TU: ...I agree with Devon, as I have the 3.08's with the original G80 code limited slip unit in my GS.
i have no idea how to do any of what you said i'm an electrician with enough mechanical ability and knowledge to basically follow the directions in the service manual the only way i know to check for posi is to spin the tires with rear end jacked up making sure both tires spin the same way (i think)
Well, that's a start. In this case you need to consider buying with the understanding that it may need to be rebuilt, no small cost there. Devon
i have am almost betting it will need a rebuild the asking price is $350 and i found another for $275 and the ad reads as follow 2.78 Posi rear end for GM A&G body. This is a BOP 8.2 10 bolt, captured bearing axles (no c-clips). With 534G U-joint, and verified drive shaft length, will fit: 1968-1972 Buick Skylark GS Stage1 so i may look at this one also
Be aware that from strength and parts availability standpoints a later 8.5" rear will be superior to the 8.2". Devon
i think i will be doing a lot more research on this before buying anything thanks for the advice and also can you point me in the right direction on where to find the info i need to better educate myself on this subject?
Tons of info right here in the "got gears" forum. Get creative with search terms and you'll have hours of reading. Devon
The quickest way to tell if it's a posi is to have someone hold one wheel while you try to turn the other one. If you can't turn it, it's a posi. If you can turn it it's either not a posi or it's shot. If you don't plan to use it for drag racing or any other consistantly abusive behavior then an 8.2 is fine.
