I am thinking of painting my car black. I found an online color chart for 72 buick, but no black. I have a hard time believing that threre has ever been a year or make that didn't have black as a chioce. I don't see many black skylarks.

Does any one know for shure? If it was offered can you let me know the code?

That would be code 19. Sales code A. There were 123 Buick gs's made in black in 72.

Yes it was. I ordered a new '72 GS in black.

GM had always used code 19 for black. It is quite common for the paint chip charts to not have a chip for black, presumably because we all know what it looks like. They usually do list code 19, though.

Brian is correct about the paint chip. Does not show one for 71' either.

Hey Jason Cook. How many all black GS's (stage 1's ) were made in 71" I have one of them.
    Thanks, Ken

    For example:

AutoColorLibrary shows the PPG paint chip chart. At the bottom right corner of the Skylark/LeSabre/etc colors, but before the Opel colors, you see:

    19 9300
    Regal Black

but there's no paint chip. 19 is the GM code. 9300 is the PPG code. If it were a R-M chart, you'd see a code other than 9300.

Yes I noticed 71 was the same way. I actually have the chart for 71 and there is no chip of black but there is the paint code if you really look. I guess they figured why waste it as black is black.

Well, there were 181 total black GS coupes made in 71. I can narrow it down considerably though. I see your car has sport mirrors. Did they come from the factory? And where was the car made?

Here's my black 71. Although Im sorry to say, its not originally black. But, its 1 of 11 Sandpiper beige cars built in Framingham :bglasses:

When I was getting the car painted, I was undeceided for quite a while. Finally the body shop needed an answer. When I told them black, they said they needed two more weeks of block sanding:Dou:

:laugh:Always is long time. Before always(1955-1959), GM used letters for paint codes.

You're right. Never say never. Or always. Actually, it looks to me like GM didn't switch from letter to number codes until the 1969 model year.

Maybe. I don't know about those new cars.:TU:
Before 55; paint codes were numbers.

Those mirrors are off the car, I replaced them with correct NOS chrome one's. My car was made in Flint if I remember right, weren't all Stage 1's???

If it was a 70, yes. But they made hardtop Stage 1's in Framingham and Freemont in 71.

They made 128 black GS's in Flint in 71. If it had came with sport mirrors from the factory, it would of been 1 of 52
