Chuck, i too have a friend who recommended a shop.. Shop said $50 an hour, so that must be the going rate for custom work.. I have dealings through work with body shops and typically see pricing around $44 an hour for collision type repairs.. but these shops wont do my car because of tying up a bay too long.. They want turnover and also know i am a little to critical of straightness..

Paint color drives the cost up also depending if you want single stage vs tricoat...

Oh, I forgot to mention that the custom shop said $10 grand will get me a straight job.. So if your budgeting $5k thay may be low for a full out color change..

Also the more prep work or strip down you can do will save you cash..

I already stripped the car to bear metal. I have the front clip and doors blocked out. I is just the rear quarters that will need some filler sanded smoth and the primmed, and blocked.

I have done most of the prep, but I think I have come to the point where a pro can finish the body in far less time than I can and do a much better job.

My body shop guy is comming over on Monday to give me his estimate:Do No:

sounds good,, when you tackle the labor stuff that helps alot.. and i agree about the body work part - i prefer to leave that to the expert also..

My neibor came over and looked at my car and sugjested that one of the guys that works for him does side work and I should get togeather with him in an effort to save some $$.

I also spent time in the shop working on the inner fender splash guards. Finaly reducing that pile of new parts and getting them installed

Chuck, you are on about the same schedule as I am. I am not doing any body work though, I leave that to my friend. I've been working on all the mechanical.

You decide on the color yet? Yellow sure going to look nice?

Saturn Yellow I like the boldness. Seeing Jim Lore's GSX convertible on your thread was all it took for me to make up my mind. But I am still using your red one as my screen saver

Well I said goodby to my skylark/GSX clone for a few weeks while she gets a bit of body work and paint. Can't wait to get her back and start the reassembly process.

And yes the tow-truck driver was HOT

At some point body work becomes art work and I am not an artist. I have the front clip very very close to done, but I want in right and I am getting the deal of a lifetime on the cost. My neibor owns a body shop and with no snow this winter he just need some work to keep his people busy.

Chuck, don't forget to fill in the hood emblem holes, Skylarks had the hood emblems not GS.

Just save the pics to your hard drive. Then click on the tree icon in the bar above your reply.

I want to see a pic of your painter in order to see if he has any hair left.
