AMC really didn't have a muscle car in the strictest sense of the word, only having the 1970 Machine and a Machine package for 1971. Buick never had a ponycar or a two-seater so they didn't compete with AMC on that end either.

The Buick-Opel was an Isuzu coupe and sedan.

    I didn't notice it was a link!

I assumed you were including only big 3, A-body equivalent models after you dismissed AMC, but what about examples before the time of the GTO: Rambler Rebel, Studebaker and Packard Hawk, Studebaker Lark R-series??? Similar concept to the GTO, just not as sucessful in the marketplace.

"Nineteen sixty-eight was a banner year for the Buick GS. With a new body and an update from 340 to 350 cid for the junior GS, sales shot up to 26,345 for the model year."

Funny how the "68 GS body style is the least popular today but it was one of the best selling years for the GS.

My dad always said the only car that beat his 70 455 gs stage 1 car was a 429 torino but only at the end of the track.........oh maybe cause of the gear ratio he was running

I am not sure how they are similar concepts to the GTO:

    1957 Rebel - fast 4-door
1958 Packardbaker Hawks - personal luxury coupe
Studebaker Lark R-series - fast compact car

FWIW, I've fallen for the "There's a link there?" thingie too. :)

The Buick-Opel was an Isuzu. The Opel brand was sold by Buick dealerships beforehand. That's my understanding, which either is true, or false due to my memory and age (or lack thereof).

So what he was thinking was an Opel GT, which never was badged as a Buick AFAIK. It was a two-seater with a 4-cylinder, I believe.

Yeah, I'm familiar with that car. Has a few traditional GM styling hallmarks, like the concave backlight. While not muscle or "very fast" it does have a V-8, which is unusual for an Opel during that time.
