So i had found some old posts from some superstock racers who ran a 350 sbb in a Apollo and were using Skylark headers? Does anyone know if this it accurate as noone makes a header for a sbb in a Apollo chassis and i thought i hadread that the passenger side will basically drop in ,and i will need to move the 2 tubes near the steering box? I can get some used hookers(headers you sick pervs lol) for $100 that i wont feel too bad about chopping up Anyone with any ides id really appreciate it thanks
Well since there is no usefull info on here for headers i will be building my own set Started last weekened and will update thread as time allows
if you are talking about the 73 apollo, i dont think that the hookers will fit, but thats just a hunch. if you have the ability to make your own headers, that would probably be your best bet.
The passenger side falls right in the drivers needs some mods, but i think it may be minimal(let you know when im done) Im not saying this about you, just in general
For the most part, most people stick in a 455 and that engine is up higher and the headers probably fit there. The guys that are running the K/sa class are probably running stock manifolds and not headers. I did not know headers would not fit but the 350 Buick is wider than other 350's. I would have liked to put a 350 in that car since the car is lighter than a Skylark. My cars weighs in at 3800 lbs with me in it. That is a lot of weight for a 350 to push. There are not too many people running a 350 in the Apollo for some reason. I don't know why it seemed like a good way to go. Port the heck out of the heads run a 456 gear, 200 4r, 4000 stall with lockup and a TA 510 cam, or a solid lifter equivalent. That would rock. (the 2004r would be for street driving)
I pursued this several years ago and could only find a set of custom pieces a racer was selling to the tune of 1K. Not in my budget,
I use the hooker skylark headers with the drvers side modified to get around the stearing box. On the passenger side the contol arm has to be modified to clear the header. Dan
ive heard of people using some old chevy bb headers and the flanges to make there own. never tried it prob will on the lesabre when the time comes.
Headers for a 350 are all mocked up and need final welding, but will be sitting in the shed for a while With that being said, lol, i just sold all of my 350 parts i was going to use, and am going to install a 455 in the car I believe ill be happier with the results, and i think id like to do something resembling what couold have been had the factory ever built a big block GS Apollo on 1973! I plan to make it look as stock and factory installed as possible, with correct emblems, iron intake and exh, down to correct manifold numbers for that year as well as all factory looking options for any GS BB car Ive already started building a 455 for it based off a late 72/early 73 block w stb bore 10.1 pistons zero decked-true 10.1-1 compression Ported stage 1 heads w stainless valves, dual springs etc cam is 230 ish at 050 520 lift ported 73 intake with plenum and runner mods ported exh manifolds 800 cfm q jet points distributor modified w pertrnox 3 system(already in car) will leave my th350 for now but add a 3500 stall i already have already has 3.73 rear gears blacked out grill w gs emblems stage 1 fender emblems correct gs rear valance emblems Would have been a whole lot easier to leave it a small block car, but hey ,thats no fun p will try to post up progress pics as i go along over the winter months Thanks
I have to say you will like the 455 more than the 350. Nobody is really putting real power to this engine yet so I do not blame you for using the 455. Any time someone asks about putting real power to the 350 you are either told to run the 212 cam or turbo it. The 350 doesn't get going till after 3500 rpm so why go with a 212 cam and go 14's. Plus I see turbo talk with the 350 but I see no action yet. Have you seen a time slip....
Its kind of funny because the person who bought my 350, has another one in gs that runs 12.68 up in wyoming at 4800 ft of d/a And its gone 12.0 in Topeka so i say it runs very well But i kind of always wanted to put a bb in this car since the day i bought it,so im gonna go with it Part of me regrets selling my 350 parts since the engine swap would be much easier, but good things take effort I should have the engine assembled by mid november if i can get caught with cutomers engines and machine shop meets it deadline Also the more free timei have the more porting the heads /intake will receive right now i need to get all the brackets, air cleaner assy, mounts and , ancillary items needed to complete a resto type engine Then once i have it built, ill remove the stock 350 and begine detailing the frt suspension and compartment areas Im a glutten for punishment i guess how you been doing Guy? Any racing this year?
Not yet finally just got back to work and I am going to school at the same time. There was a guy at the track at Buick Nats in Norwalk Ohio and he runs a Buick Apollo with a 455 and I think he is in the 11's some where. I miss going to the nats I usually do pretty good with the bracket racing. It is those later rounds when you start to get up against the guys that race all the time that are hard to beat. Hey what type of gearing are those guys running to get the good times. I have been thinking about going up to a 411 gear since I now have a 4 speed auto. I have been kind of thinking about going with a solid lifter cam and see how that goes. Just don't know what size to go with yet.
