has anyone used powertrax in there rearend or just gone strait to posi. and if i goto posi can i use the same gears in my rear end there nice for cruising around town
I have been running a Powertrax setup for many years with out any trouble. They are fine in a street car with out sticky tires. They don't do well on the drag strip. If you go straight posi you should be able to use your gear set, but check with the vendor to be sure. Mike D.
Iwould have to disagree with the not good at the track deal. I have run them at the track and the way they are designed seem to excel as they lock up tighter in the straight etc. So alot of this like or dislike is a preference in the owner really. Like anything there is a torque and horsepower limit. Posi, lock right, No slip etc. I would say the lock right limit would be 300-350 and the no slip 400-450 ish range safely. On the street pretty much no limit as there is no HOOK on the street. Jim
can i use my current grears with both posi and no slip and is installing the no slip a pretty straight foward install and what hickups can i expect when installing it just seems that no slip is more user friendly to install jim i know your a rear ennd gooroo
I looked into this and considered a Power Trax unit because it would allow me to leave the rear end assembled for the most part for an easy instal, it sounds like a good match for your car especially if you plan to keep your rear end ratio. I Later decided to have Jim build me a nice Mosier 12 bolt, but whatever you do get your parts through Jim as he will make sure you get the right parts.
JOSH we do not KNOW what gears you have so we can not answer that question. Jim No slip is a bit trickier as you have to keep the active spacer in trhe correct slot or it will take the unit right out. Once itiis installed your good. Install it wrong your done for. Lock right is a bit easier Both the power trax units can be used in any 2 or 3 series making them ALL ratio friendly. Posi units in the aftermarket are 3 sries only which means 2.73-4.56 and beyond If you have 2.56 or 2.41 then you need a factory 2 series posi unit. Jim J D

ok guys my gear are aound 2.98 if i did the calculator correctly at 65 mph my rpms were right around 2600 I like those gears not to terible on the highway

That is a 25" tire. The tire is too short and is contributing to a numerical increase in you rear gear ratio. You probably have a 2.93 or a 2.73 gear. 336/tire diameter X rear gear X MPH = RPM with no converter slip. 336/25 X 2.93 X 65 = 2559 RPM. The stock tire size on that car is 26.6" tall. You should have 235/70R-14 which is a G70-14. Original tire on a Skylark was a G78-14 which was about 27" tall.
The poor man's way of figuring out the rear ratio is to jack it up. If a single track block one tire from turning, you can mark the tire and the drive shaft then turn the rear wheel until the drive shaft makes two full rotations. If posi, only rotate once of the drive shaft. If you get 3.5 turns, you can guess 3.42 or 3.55, if you get 3, you can guess 3.08. If you get 2.5, you are screwed! Not exact but it is closer than speedo/tach/tire if all are not known to an exacting degree.
X2. G-d knows most of us never change the gear lube:grin:. Perfect opportunity to do so. There will be 2 numbers on the ring gear. Divide the smaller number into the bigger, and you have your ratio.
so the numbers are 15 and 41 so thats 2.73 im going to take a pic of the rear end and post it so you guys can tell me about it
so im correct what im looking at is a 8.2 open diff with 2.73 gears just so im not mistaken and now what is the spline number for this rear end because i was looking at this and wondering if it would work on my rear end with my gears http://nh.craigslist.org/pts/2927597950.html and Jim you were saying something about series would that make this a 3 series
Too bad you don't have the stock rear in that car, an 8.5. I can't tell what 8.2 that is. Monzaz will tell us. I'd hold off on the craigslist rear until you know what you have.
