I just starting installing my Gear vendors overdrive and already ran into issues. I have a hurst comp plus shifter and it will not fit. The base plate on the left upper corner hits the Gear Vendors case. Larry, I know you have one hoping you can shed some light on this. Thanks, Gary
Gary, I can't comment on your Hurst shifter, but I had Rob Chilenski of Stage1 Performance install my GV. Part of the installation involved modifying the cross member to drop the mount about a 1/2" or a full 1", I can't remember. Rob is a dealer for GV. Maybe you should call him. He may be able to advise you better. I know the installation in an A body can involve a little "massaging" of the floor boards. http://stage1automotive.com/
Larry, Not what I wanted to hear. The website makes you believe it is pretty much a bolt in. Was not expecting to modify the tunnel. The thought of taking a hammer to it kills me. Thanks for your input. Gary
I called GV. The tech dept. said they will e-mail some info on modifiing the shifter plate along with taking some material off the coupler. Thanks for the heads up on the cross member. Sounds like the best way to make everything fit. Can't wait to test out!!
Larry, Hoping you could tell me if you have the exhaust crossover pipe. It looks like the GV unit will not clear the exhaust. I may have to just remove it. Just wanted to know if you ran in to this and what you did. I may be able to weld it in further back but I think it defeats the purpose. Thanks, Gary
My X pipe clears no problem. I have MT headers, so my X is further back anyway. I'll have to take a look.
Mine is an "H" design. Sounds like I may have to go to an "X" style to clear my GV. I got the Hurst shifter to fit. Had to grind away here and there but did get it to fit. I will keep you posted on my progress. Appreciate your help. Gary
Hey guys how much did doing this cost? My car is a 72 Skylark, 350CI/350TH. How much fuel savings, rpm savings?
By the time you are done, between the kit, installation, and new driveshaft, figure about 3000.00 It is a .78 overdrive gear. It drops my RPM by about 600 RPM on the highway. I have 3.73's with a 28" tire (3.55 effective). My RPM at 60 MPH is at 2200. Gas mileage will depend on carburetor jetting, camshaft profile, and other factors. I went from 11-12 MPG to 14-16 MPG with my old combo. I need to get a good Q-jet with APT on my current engine and get the timing optimized to see what this engine is capable of. I went with the GV mainly to drop my highway RPM, and because it was rated for 1200 HP stock.
If you are doing it for fuel savings it is a bad investment unless it is your daily driver or driven a lot more than most of these cars.
:laugh: Don't think I'll be doing any driving until mid to late March, besides, I can always confiscate my other one from Curly. G-d knows he has enough of them:grin:
Look around you might find a good used one. I bought one for $1000. After buying a yoke from GV and having a driveshaft sortened and the oil GV recommends I'm in it about$1150.00. Did my own install, I only PMd the wizard 3 times. Bob H.
