HI, the car is a 68 Lesabre convertible I was fixing the interior light switches in the doors to get them working. I had the top down as it was a nice&warm day. After tinkering with the door light switches I could not get the top to get up! Nothing happens when I flip the switch. Ive had this car for 5 years and the top has always worked perfectly. I can not even hear the top motor working. Do the light switches play a role in the top operation? I noticed that the drivers side was diferrent from passenger. Drivers side interior light switch had two wires, passenger side only one. How do I begin fixing this? Do I need to check something, and what? And with the top stuck down, how do I get acces to the pump, if needed? THANKS!
Start by checking all the fuses. 2nd if you have a shop manual check where the power for the top comes from. You probably have a blown fuse from messing around with the light switches. Good luck
I dont have a shop manual. Are the top fuses also in the main fuse box along with the others, and can you remeber how they are labeled in there? And are they "normal" glass fuses or are they relays?
I have a 70 manual and it shows power going to the up-down switch from a circuit breaker. I am pretty sure that circuit is in your regular fuse box along with the glass fuses. Found that in a fisher body manual.
Mine did that too, would go down not up, before i tore into it I found the switch for the top had no screws holding it into the socket, somebody (me) didn't put them back in last time the dash was apart, when I pushed hard on the switch it would make contact, so I put the screws in where they belonged and it's been working very since, just a thought.
Same happend to me at a show last fall, found out when it started to rain. Mine was actually the motor had died but fortunatly I had a spare in the garage. Recommend starting at the motor and test to make sure you have power there.
I don't know '68 or '70. But My '73 Olds had a (1/2"x1/4"x1/2"more or less) rectangular zinc plated box that served as a circuit breaker for the top and windows on the fuse block. It would trip with an overload. And reset itself after it cooled off.
