Spray paint. That's what Buick did.

George, It's not the lens that's blacked out, it's the lower part of the speedometer that is painted black. I learned this when I converted my car from column shift to floor shift. The speedo has to be removed from the dash in order to do this. All I did was take a piece of black vinyl and covered up the P R N D L1 L2 and it looks like factory.

Most times they are broken and fall away from the dash. Likely a bad design as the mounting tabs break from the lense. The last time I just cut a piece of black vacuum hose and positioned it to hold the lens to the dash. Can't see it and it works.
    Just a thought.

Yep mine just broke off the tabs and fell back, had to fish it out,now its an open hole there,it looks to be a mission to put one back, but id like to put one back in.

Ok, I see. I stand corrected. It looks like an easy fix though. An unbroken lens and some black paint should do the trick. The hard part will be trying to install it.

Install is not easy. Will likely have to drop the steering column. Held in my two 1/4" (I think) head screws to the metal dash. Might be able use an old ingnition wrench that size to get in there (might have to bend it). All this with the seat rearward and on your back under the dash (age of individual will increase difficulty.. ). If you don't find a new one, perhaps you can glue it with crazy glue or gorilla glue back together if not too broken.
Should be easier with the black out lense to just use rubber hose to hold it in place. The one I fixed had the PRNDL so light had to show through and not be able to see the rubber hose. Sometimes we expect too much from a 45 year old car. :Brow:

    Gook Luck!
