As most of us know you can never totally relax with our old cruisers. Murphy's law strikes again. Yesterday on a 125 mile cruise that included a parade we were entered in, my tranny decides it didn't want to shift out of 1st. It acted just liked the vacuum hose came off the modulator. Wrong the hose was still on. I drove the last 25 miles home in 1st gear the temperature by then was about 94 degrees. I haven't looked at it yet but i'm hoping it's just the modulator or maybe it could be the governor, I don't know. Today being Moms day probably wouldn't have been a good time to be in the garage under the car. Bob H.
Sorry to hear that Bob. Check vacuum at the modulator. Then pull the modulator and point the vacuum nipple down. If any ATF comes out it is toast. Check that the modulator holds vacuum, if it doesn't, it's toast. Also check that the kick down connection at the transmission isn't seeing 12 volts constant. That will prevent an upshift at anything but WOT. Last, pull the governor and do a visual inspection. Look at the drive gear and make sure it isn't damaged. Check for the weights damaged/binding, and see if the valve in the stem is moving freely. Clean it with carburetor spray, dry it, dip it in ATF and re install. Good Luck. It's always something.
Tried to change my responce. Trying to do this on my smart phone. If you can't find a leak on the modualator hose, then pull out the govenor and look at the teeth. It most likely will be one or the other.
Thanks Larry and Michael it looks like you both posted at the same time with pretty much the same suggestions.:TU: I will post the results. Bob H.
He was for a fact. He was sure something would go wrong. Of course neither one of know of which Murphy the other is speaking. ---------- Post added at 12:38 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:36 PM ---------- It is the governor gear, i'm just not sure why it wore the way it did.o No: Bob H.
Bob, What does the damage look like? Are the teeth worn evenly, or are you missing teeth on one side? If the governor seizes in it's bore, you can break off a few teeth.
She was with me, but like Bill said it was Mothers Day so I gave her a pass. Bob H. ---------- Post added at 02:23 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:22 PM ---------- They are worn in the middle evenly all the way around. Picture pending. Bob H.
Meanwhile, your old 200-4r is humming along nicely somewhere... We have the same relationship with Murphy. :af:
Well, no good in looking back. Have you driven it enough yet to provide a comparison on likes/dislikes between the two? I am considering getting a GV too.
Yeah, and we all pray for good karma every time we hit the go-pedal with a 200-4R behind a big block.
