i go to the local store that i bought a gallon of fireglow paint from in 2006. i take the mixing sheet with me thinking no problem he can mix using the formula off the sheet, nope, wrong, ppg changed their formula so it takes him a few days to get the correct formula and mix the paint. now when i painted my car in 2006 a gallon was about $1000 so i figured a pint may be $125 and will be good for me, all i have is some stone chips that need touched up, well a pint, a measly 16 ounces, 1/8th gallon, 1/2 quart, cost $260, multiply that by 8 to make a gallon and you're talking $2080 for a gallon. i sure am glad the car doesnt need a repaint. paint, clearcoat, thinner, hardner and it would cost $2500+ just for materials:eek2: for a paint job.

1st pic is a couple days after it was painted, the 2nd pic is a year later.

Red was always the most expensive color because the pigments come from only one place in the world. Somewhere in India I believe.

Agreed the primer prices and basic supplies are also way up. At least we are not forced int the water based paint yet.Unlike California and some other states.:spank:

No kidding about paint prices. I also do wood working and was looking at a really nice piece of mahogany, with nice curly grain. If I bought a cubic foot of that particular wood, it would have been $3600+.

Just paid $270 for a pint of Dark Cherry Red Pearl Metallic, which is the color of my car. Stuff goes for well over 2k a gallon. Damn red, and pearl on top of it. I'm glad the guy before me had to pay for the initial paint job.

The economy line Sherwin Williams Dimension Single Stage I used on the Riv was $350.00.
After adding in the primer and hardener I was in for $500.00.
I know that was relatively cheap, but when you have to budget it hurt. Thank goodness I didn't botch it up spraying it.

Re: whats up with paint prices (but I LOVE red!!!)

Yall scaring me! :eek2: I just bought a gallon of SPI Epoxy Primer, a qt of Reg Build Urethane Primer, and a qt of Red Oxide Epoxy Primer to use as a sealer as well as the appropriate amount of activator for all and a gallon of waterborne wax and grease remover. Planning on getting their clear coat as well. I spent around $225.The original plan was to paint the car red. Or was...... Was looking for recommendations for a quality, affordable, finish brand. My budget build may require a color change to remain on budget!?!? Broke and on a Budget, Jim/Rott:TU:
PS: Side question, what am I using to clean my gun after spraying epoxy primer? I`m sure the activant will work, but I would think you would save it for the epoxy and clean the gun with ,perhaps Laquer Thinner? Thanks in Advance for advice!

Don't forget to add in the cost of Epoxy primer, the hardener, reducer, and the high build primer, hardener, and reducer. Most people have no idea the cost involved.

Actually there is still lead in some industrial paints and maybe auto paints I have heard. Also often products from China are loaded with lead paint such as decorations on drinking glasses dishes, kids toys etc.

chckout the local auto store or duplicolors web site, they have pre mixed[as in all you do is put it in your gun and shoot]but if the cost of orig or firemist adds that much more value to your car then step up to the plate,i dont think you could get a corvette for bidcane money, its just big buissines, fat man dances-por man pays the band

Do body shops get a discount on purchases from the neighborhood auto body supply store? If so how much?

To clean a spray gun, I disassemble first, wipe clean with paper towels, rinse gun body passages with lacquer thinner from a squirt bottle into a cup, using brushes to get gun clean. Place tip in cup and soak. Wipe parts with thinner-damp towel. A few more squirts of thinner for a final rinse. This method only uses a few ounces of thinner to get a gun clean.
Many epoxies can be reduced with lacquer thinner. There are formulations sold as lacquer/epoxy thinners... dunno if there is a difference, or if it's just a sales gimmick.

    Yes, but not much.
I just did a quick estimate for you. This would be Martin Senour Crossfire Platinum base coat in a code 72 red which is for 70's-80's buicks.
1 gal $144.00 for "walk in" and $124.00 for wholesale...

DupliColor paint sucks channel-water! I used it on my car, and the cost is low for a reason. There are other posts detailing problems with it. You'll have to look for them yourselves- I'm not inclined to look past my own personal experience.

Doug, remember that a gallon would be less than 8X what you paid as there is usually a price break for quantity, ie a qt is a bit less than 2x the price of a pint and so on. That being said the prices have gone up a lot in the last few years, DuPont Chromabase (now Axalta Chromax) can get upwards of $800-900 a gal for reds and such. I have been shooting more and more Nason for this reason. Of course since you have fireglow you are stuck with PPG for the time being though.

    Doug,
