I inherited my dad's 1962 GMC 1/2ton shortbed pu. He "restored" it years ago as the 2nd owner. He had it painted wild strawberry metallic,(inside and out), with pearl mica white on the rims, bumpers, grill letters and a bit on the hoods side badges. All new, at the time, interior which is still perfect. The down sides: The wood bed was dinged up so he and his buddy had the bright idea to plane them out. ou: So now the boards don't fit. Still have 'em as templates so as not to have to buy a new set of boards. While driving back to IL from Wy it slipped a main bearing. The motor didn't blow, but it's a 365v6 and nobody really wants that engine. It actually depreciates the book value 15% It's got a busted shock mount on the rear passenger side and while being towed the rest of the way to IL I believe it was the ball joint on the passenger side went out too. So I'm looking for opinions. Fix it, or sell as is? I'd love to keep it as it's the only one he ever finished. But it's not one I need. That, and the fiance says we don't get married until the house is built. :eek2: I also figure whoever would buy it would probably pull the whole drivetrain and replace it. Probably with a Chevy 350 and an r700. uzzled: Sooo, feedback please.
If you like it -Fix it and enjoy it! It was your dad's pride and joy for crying out loud. If the fianc cant deal with it find another. I got an ultimatum only once from my bride, and I called her bluff and she hung around and I still have my 70 GS 455 ,my 87 GN and a bunch of other toys she wanted gone . Id hate myself if I had let any of them go. Give in now and its all over for you.
I maybe shoulda been a bit more clear. lol. My dad left me close to a dozen vehicles. ou: Of which I plan on keeping 3. Which means I'll have 4 when all's said and done. My Skylark, his 82 Chevy PU, 82 280ZX and an Ironsmith Bugatti (1927 Bugatti type 35 replicar). Also, none of them run and are in various states of disrepair. I'm not made of money and want to get rid of the ones I'm not keeping. And my fiance isn't being "bullish". She wants the house built as do I. She's not demanding it to be done. She'd get kicked to the curb if she did. BUT she's not like that. Really. I've been with a lot of psycho chicks in the past. She's not. I can only find one flaw with her: Horrible taste in men. Selling the truck is a means to an end. Even if I was single, I'd still be selling it. I'm just tring to figure out what's the best way to go about it.
List it for sale at a reasonable price and then start doing a little bit of work to it and getting it closer to running... If it does not sell then you will have to decide if you want to put time and money into it... You may or may not get the money you invest back out of the truck but one thing is for certain.... You will not get your time back.... So use your time wisely.
Besides the engine the work sound like small easy things. Even the bed is easy, personally i would buy a bed kit and do it yourself. Yank that engine/tranny and drop in a simple 350gm crate engine with a stock 700R4. Truck will be worth more with a fresh driveline, get good gas mileage and shouldnt break the bank. I cant seeing it cost more than $4k to do yourself. Sell one of the other jalopies to pay for this work. Then you should get decent money for this truck upon the sale, if not barter with someone towards that home you want to build.
I could do all that. Everything said here has already crossed my mind. Although I have access to all the wood working equipment and can make the bed myself. I've still got the original wood to use as templates. Time is easier than money for me these days. I've got a 290 chevy with a powerglide that ought to slip right in according to an uncle. Cleaning and freshening those up wouldn't be that big a deal, or break the bank. All the other "Jalopies" p are going to get sold anyway. Nobody "needs" nine damned vehicles. Especially when they aren't running.
For those who are interested I've decided to keep the truck. It will be getting most all the running gear from an Olds 98. 425 Rocket, the Olds version of an st400, and possible the rear end. Suspension and brakes will be updated to handle the extra power and weight.
