Think ive decided on welding two of the 9in Dynomax thin wall bullets together. I had just two on my car at one time and had a awesome sound just a tad bit too loud and for only $20 each and made of stainless pretty economical and light too boot Part number 24251 or maybe the 17224
I have them on my skylark and they are way, way too loud. My neighbors, my wife and I hate myself when I start it and drive into the village for gasoline. headers/3.5" pipes to the rear bumper with Dynomax race bullets are over the top. If Stubnosebrock is online he can attest to that.
Those flowmasters I posted are straight through design. All of the top racers use them over all others. Gary
If anyone looking to keep there car from sounding to loud and still want your power, look on the internet, they are several companies that make a good quality muffler and not rob the power to. good example Borla! Just look them up. Everyone has different opinions on different exhaust set ups. It's a matter of doing it right from the beginning, not guessing! Gary
Flows are nothing but heavy noise makers. So many better choices out there now for race or street that will bury the dronemasters.
May I ask what the top fastest doorslammers use? You'll be shocked!:shock: I know there are plenty of others out there and some don't like flow masters, I am looking for maximum power in torque and horsepower. I have looked through some many exhaust company's and asked more questions then I ever can imagine and they all say the same thing, " it's how you build you exhaust system and have the proper size pipes and cross over you need if needed and headers too, the slip on collectors do a lot and so does step headers, and yes cancelling the noise part can help in all mufflers. If you mean the top fastest guys that pay for all their own stuff and do it as a hobby out of their garage, the answer is they don't. They run open exhaust going down the track unless they just want to cut down on the noise. And then it's more so personal preference. If you're talking about the guys who do it for a living, they use whoever's sticker is on the side of the car and cutting them a check for using their product. And it is true that a lot of it depends on how the exhaust system is structured and whether or not scavenging is coming into play or not. With a true straight through muffler, the CFM rating should be high enough that it won't matter enough one way or another and it just comes down to quieting things down a bit. The other factor is if you are trying to fine tune the sound the way you like it. Then it can be a give or take. The main problem with looking at the numbers provided by manufacturers is they don't give you all the info. Temp, humidity, Bar Pressure, was the car cold vs hot, etc etc. So no telling where they get the numbers from and "fair" the comparison was. Also, is it track proven or dyno proven. What I do know is on regular production vehicles be it trucks or cars, Flowmaster always claims more HP/TQ. Yet whenever any of the magazines or whomever did a back to back comparison between stock and adding the Flows, more times than not the power and performance went down. Now, same thing applies, you don't get all the info. And really and truly how much HP/TQ are we talking going from one straight through muffler to another?? It's probably pretty marginal.
It's like I said,it all determines on if want torque over hp or vise versa. when I build any given engine I ask if it is for street or what ever. this gives me a some what answer on exhaust system. now,what you think about hooker headers mufflers? the ones that have a chamber and. stainless steel wool inside. a good friend of mine went 9.20's all day long and drove that car daily,yes it was a chevy. it was a 1968 Camero with a destroked 427 big block measuring 440 cid. he never liked the flows either but like said "dyno testing is the only true answer and your engine pretty. much determines which exhaust it likes, not you. I have used several exhaust mufflers, header extentions, and such, it does really depends on what your engine likes not the person. here is a perfect example, look at the new headers for the LS engines, they all have a primary pipe reduction before going into a bell shape collector. That header it self is for maximum hp and tq. now is that header not good for you? not really because you are not looking for maximum power rt now! remember this everyone, building a car is more involved then you can possibly think. If you in it for fun then mix and match until your heart contents! No I'm not being a smart butt about this either,but i'm always looking for more power no matter it is nitrous, turbo's, super chargers, or be it naturally aspirated but,i'm always on the hunt for the most power possible !
