A new Survivor class has been established for the 2014 GS Nationals car show. It is designed to honor those Buicks that are unrestored original cars. This will be a point judged class, using a 400 point judging criteria. Come bring your original Buick and be among the cars honored in this very first Survivor Class! I may bring my 70 GSX out from seattle one repaint in the early to mid 80's and repro G60 on it that all that has been done to it? would that fit in?
By definition it would be a untouched virgin car, but I would consider any car with original interior, mechanicals, and an older repaint a survivor. The blue car that Tony Rose now owns would be tough to beat, me and my dad owned the car and were technically the second owners, it had all the coil spring tags, markings, stickers etc etc still in place. It had around 48kmi when we owned it and DROVE the car to Bowling Green from SCand from NYC to SC with the AC blowing at 80mph. Miss that car something fierce, it was a Gulfstream Blue 70 GS 455 with white top and interior, it even had the ooriginal belrs and hoses up until about 2weeks prior to us acquiring it.
DL7265 has a 22k mile or so 70 GS455, still original paint (red with white painted top), etc., from CA. Not sure he is going to want to drive it from TX and put 1500+ miles on it though.
Man red on white is awesome I remember back in middle school I had a Muscle Car Review with Fred Englhart's car that Kliener done , wire the pages out on that issue, the 12k or 2k mile cant remember which black 67 GS with the yellow interior is making the internet rounds rite now I think bouncing to different collectors I guess
anything to help boost the show field attendance would be a huge plus , past few years been SLIM, im excited for the survivor class, some day two cars would be even better
Thanks for your question, Mike. We will be using a 400 point judging form for Survivor class. There is no official definition of "Survivor" - it depends upon the degree of originality. A complete repaint, for example, does not prevent the car from receiving Survivor designation, if most everything else on the car is original. A repaint AND a new interior probably would keep it from achieving Survivor status. To answer a couple of other questions - yes, of course, Buick wagons are allowed. The car doesn't not have to have its original tires. Tires, belts and hoses, batteries are all considered "consumables" and are expected to be replaced over time, so there will be no deductions for those providing they are replaced with the correct type for the era of the car. You might think about it this way - is the car 75% or so original? If so, it's a good candidate for Survivor class. If there has been a LOT of restoration, then it may not be. Each car will be judged against the factory original standard - cars will not be judged against each other.. So, we're likely going to have multiple cars eligible to receive Survivor designation. Thank you! Alan Oldfield GSCA #959
Alan, This class is really a great idea. I know I personally would walk past an entire row of concours restored cars to get to one unrestored car. An unrestored car seems to be rare these days at a show but when I do see one they generally get lots of attention. I guess there are a lot of us that enjoy seeing how the cars were really built. My only suggestion before this class blossoms would be to changed the name from "Survivor" to "Unrestored" since the term Survivor has been a trademarked word by the NCRS for over 20 years for describing a unrestored collector car and they take it very seriously. It's probably not likely that they would come after the GSCA or the GS Nationals (I think Mark at the GSCA told me they were separate businesses) but the GSCA should probably avoid any conflict before it occurs rather than take the chance since it is a trademarked term. Here's some quick reading on the subject: http://www.bloomingtongold.com/print.php?link=survivor_faqs http://www.survivorcollectorcar.com/ For the link below you will need to scroll down to the story from January 18, 2008 that reprints the article by Drew Hardin that appeared in the July 2007 issue of Muscle Car Review titled "What, Exactly, is a Survivor?" which describes MCR being contacting after using the word Survivor on the cover of their magazine. https://www.bloomingtongold.com/print.php?link=news With all that said, I'm really looking forward to seeing the cars in the class and would like to participate in the future.
I think my 69 GS 400 convertible would qualify? Only 1 repaint in lacquer with original interior/top/driveline and trim?? Only it's deep in Idaho.. Chris, fly into Mike's and drive it out.. ?? LOL
Alan, "The car doesn't not have to have its original tires. Tires, belts and hoses, batteries are all considered "consumables" and are expected to be replaced over time, so there will be no deductions for those providing they are replaced with the correct type for the era of the car." So if the consumables are 30 years old but not correct they should be replaced with "correct" parts ? Is there a judging manual written for this class? or just loosely going off the concours 400 point class ? Just trying to figure out what the " rules" are before the event. thanks, DL
HI DL the consumables should be replaced with the correct type for example, if the correct hose type is molded, it should be replaced with a molded hose rather than a kinked hose. Another example, if the car is supposed to have bias ply tires (pre-1967) then it should be equipped with bias ply tires, not radials. I have not written a judging manual at this point, but if you wish, I can send you the BCA 400 point form for the unrestored class. We will use it as a guideline for this first year. if you have more questions, email me at: pacecar76@aol.com Alan Oldfield GSCA #959
Alan, It was nice meeting you and your wife at the GS Nationals. Thanks to both of you for putting together and judging the survivor class. I understand that the class was a last minute idea and therefore no tropys were available to the individuals who's cars met the judging guidelines to be designated as survivors. Is there any plans to provide us with any type of verification of our cars as survivors? Also, who can I contact for a copy of the judging sheet? Once again thanks for your hard work on putting this together at the last minute. As you know. This was the first time in 13 plus years that I have entered my car in any class at the GS Nationals. I always said. That if a survivor class became available. I would be willing to pay the fee($110.00) to enter the show again. Zach
HI Zach! It was great to meet you in BG, and I want to thank you for bringing your beautiful '71 GSX and participating in the first Survivor/Original class car show. All of the participants who achieved Survivor status will receive a trophy. With this being the first year, we had no idea how many cars to expect, so it was difficult to anticipate how many trophies to prepare. Several were handed out at the show, and Bennett Jones is preparing trophies for the people who did not receive one at the show - so yours should be coming in the next few weeks, as will the awards for the others who did not receive theirs in BG. Also, copies of your judging sheet are available by sending a SASE to the Carolina's chapter which administers the entire car show. I am sorry I don't have that address at my finger tips tonight (I am on the road for work) but I will get it and post it here. You can also email me at pacecar76@aol.com We were VERY pleased with the turnout this year, and hope to have a bigger turnout for the class next year. Again, thanks Zach! Looking forward to seeing you next year. Alan Oldfield GSCA# 959
