Okay guys, I have some rally wheels, but they are rusty so, I was thinking about painting them or powder coating them. Can I strip or sandblast the chrome and paint them black? would it work? I don't know how this guy did it, but I like the way they look, and my wheels are somewhat rusty. So I want to make them look like this if it can work at a fair cost. Whats the best way of going ahead and making them like this?
Thats what I mean, It does look good. Hopefully someone here has an idea on how it could have been done. I was also wondering what should be done about the centre caps? I was thinking painting them black too (would have been cool, if they were black, and red Riviera writing on them)
Did you ever figure out how they painted them black? Have you done anything with this idea yet? Thanks Gary
I found 29 photos of that car if you are still interested. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3152080/1969-buick-riviera/photo-gallery/
Myself, I would powder coat, there a lot of options in black. 20% 30% gloss, the center cap "looks" like a freeze plug or something similar. It's a slick look. post pics when you get it done. I just may do the same.
Have a neighbour who owns a late model chrysler 300 with the oem chromed rims. A year ago, he roughed the surface of the rims, epoxy primed and then painted them satin black. Good quality result but not my cup of tea.
You can powdercoat over chrome. We blast for profile 1st, then coat. Only issues you may run into would be if the chrome is cheap and flaking but even that can be handled by a good PC'r. That particular color looks alot like "Black Magic" by Prismatic Powders but as stated there are more blacks available then one could possibly imagine.
A stock 71-73 chrome rally Buick center cap would look good. Or a 1967 1st gen cap with the ribs on it. That would look hot. I have a set of 5 rims that have rust in the corners. I just may do this with them.
Wow! :eek2: That's the final product after a frame off resto? Is that supposed to be some kind of a Nascar tribute? ou: To each his own I suppose.
