Good morning. Carb spacing is greater than the stock dual quad intake; 8 1/2" versus 8". Also the intake sits up a little higher, about 7/8". Marty
Hi, Last year I had the pleasure of speaking with Dennis Manner at the back to the bricks show in Flint , guess one of his first tasks at Buick was the dual quad intake and he told me that those were indeed engineering prototypes. Guess engineering had access to their own casting department. I believe all x-castings were preproduction prototypes on all the GM brands Regards,
I don't know but something is funny about this one....just seems too tall and the carb flanges too thick and the x-tag too crisp........very interesting indeed. An EELCO experiment ?.......below is a picture of mine........Ted....you got a good picture of yours ? Peace WildBill
So....it looks very much like yours Ted........just taller. Very interesting.....very interesting indeed. Peace WildBill
In the pics on Ebay there seems to be a hole drilled in the runner in the 3pic. and the 5 pic. what would be the reason for this?
Any idea of how many X manifolds were cast and how so many escaped the factory/engineering depts? Between Bill, Ted and eBay, that's at least 3. Just wondering-
There's a huge number of those intakes! If not so, they wouldn't be so widely spread. My guess would be that they could have been given/sold to racers for test reasons, as Buick experimental dept. was quite involved in 60s drag racing. Hot Rod magazines of the period might give a clue as well.
You can see the back hole on pic 1 also. Vacuum reference and maybe the other two were added to see if there was a difference between the three? No clue but the cast in locations are all on the same side and maybe that is because of the dual plane type layout? Never seen one but I think you should buy it Greg! :Brow: Get that engine back on the dyno and get it tuned with that dual quad!!!
I still have my X-intake, as well. Will post some pics. Mine is a late production prototype. Carb spacing and height are same as the cast iron production version. They were mocking up the AC brackets holes and other small details, but the overall casting is same as production. From ones I have seen/heard of, I think there are about 5 floating around in various stages of production readiness.
Russ got that one for $1050. I almost won it but got outbid with 3 seconds to go. Oh well, that's eBay..... what happens on eBay, stays on eBay. Us Nailheaders are bound to bump into each other there.
