'67 GS 400 pinstripe confusion

    BUQUICK I'm your huckleberry.

Pontiac used the same pinstripe on a '67 GTO as a '67 Buick GS, but Pontiac specified in the assembly manual that the thick stripe be on the bottom. Here is a photo of an original paint '67 GTO. Sorry to keep posting things that don't answer your original question. When I find the other photos I have of an original paint '67, I'll post them.

No apology necessary. Thanks for the pics. And by all means keep 'em coming! I love looking at old factory photos, no mater what brand car. That pic of the 65 GTO was especially interesting. I figured they must have had some sort of guide or fixture to paint the stripes in a straight line consistently. Thanks again Gary!

Definitely a Burgler being used there and with that kind of guide rig it would be easy to start your stripe "upside down" since the jig is holding the tool steady and not clipped to the tool, once you have started to run the stripe you are committed.

Hmmmm...I wonder. Did GM ever build GTO's and GS's at the same plant somewhere? Possible cause for the upside down stripes on the black car??

Brnging up an old post here, but I think you might be right. I just checked the photo of the trim tag of the 9k mile black car with the upside down pin stripes and it was built at the Baltimore plant, and yes GTOs were also built at Baltimore.

Also, here is the sheet from the assembly manual that shows the stripe details for the '67 GS. If you look closely you can see that they used the '66 sheet and changed the fender vent on the car to look like a '67. Of course the color information was also changed to reflect the '67 colors. One thing to note: the pinstripes were either red or white. No black stripes, regardless of the body color.

That's interesting. Maybe we need to put a call out to see if any original paint Baltimore built cars are out there and see if "The Black One" is a freak or not. Thanks Gary!

Hey Tom, great pics to still have, but doesn't really solve the mystery. It does however, create the question of red center caps vs. black tri-shields. When exactly did they switch over from red to black? Or was it due to different assy. plants or date of production? Who really knows for sure? It does prove that at least 1 brand new '67 was delivered with the red caps. Thanks for posting those pics!

    Can't answer that,sorry.
Mom and Dad married in 65 while Dad was on leave from Army. Mom and Dad kept in contact through US Mail, and Dad had Mom get dealer brochures for 67 GTO, 67 442, and the 67 GS400. My Dads parents always had Buicks, and Dad cut his teeth on an Invicta, then a Wildcat.
Dad looked the brochures over and told her to order the Buick. He told her 400, 4spd, 3.55 Posi,Black interior, you pick the color, she chose Burgundy Mist. I believe the car was delivered in April of 67, so it wasn't a real early build date car.
Mom must have also checked the box for the upper belt moldings.
Dad told her to get some miles on it before he got home so it would be "broke in", as he didn't want to have to baby it.
Mom said Dad was a mad man when he got home from the service, she said he was pissed at the world, and pissed at Uncle Sam for having to spend a couple years of his life drafted into the service. She said he acted like he was trying to make up for lost time, and that poor Buick paid for it. She said the first set of rear tires were gone in less than a thousand miles.
Dad said the car was very strong, and he "put away" quite a few cars that were supposed to be "badder" and "faster" than an old mans Buick. That fun ended early one night when a cam bolt came loose and lodged itself between the cam gear and timing chain in 4th gear at about 5000 rpm. The car had less than 3000 miles on it and was at the dealer for warranty engine work.
Long story short, the car should have received a crate engine, but instead went to two different dealers for engine rebuild/repair, and the car never ran right again. They held onto the car until 1973 and sold it for $700 with 32,000 miles.:ball:
A couple more pics, and a pic of my old white 67.

I feel like crying myself after reading that, Wow, so cheap for a low mileage 1 owner car!

Your White GS reminds me of how my car looked before it was painted, except, of course, for the red center caps.

The white car WAS a very very early build car. I believe, if I remember correctly, had a August or September of 1966 build date. Built at the California plant. Car had red bird caps, and some leftover 66 trim pieces, notice the lower piece of trim between the bumper and the front tire, and both the front and rear wheel opening moldings were multi-piece units. The rear had little dog leg pieces from that lower feature line to the bottom of rocker/quarter. White car and Mom and Dads car also had the narrow 64-65-66 rear differential, where as my very late built 67 GS400 had the wider rear that is commonly referred to as the 68-72 width rear.

To me, the red bird caps are correct, as that was what I was used to looking at in old pictures and slides of Mom and Dads car when I was growing up.

I'm thinkin' Buick put those red caps on all the cars they could until they ran out of them. Then they started with better looking, absolutely correct, Black tri-shield caps that were used for 4 model years.:Brow:

The car in the ad for sale has a VIN of 104325 so that's an early car (4,325 built at the Fremont, CA plant). So those red caps may indeed be correct for that car if that plant had them left over from '66 and just using them up. We know it happened at other plant as proven by Tom, so it probably happened at Fremont too.

Didn't realize that 3 months after posting to this, I would have my old white 67 back in the stable.
Somewhere over the last 16 years, someone peeled off the black pinstripes, so I will re-stripe it using the correct Red this time.

Just going to use tape stripe, not painted on.

idk if this is the case with buicks but ive seen the strips be put on by dealers rather than the factory too. ive even seen the factory forget stuff like ps and the dealer have to go back and do it. my sisters jeep is prime example it said on the window sticker bluetooth option but the add on module was never put in. they dealer had to go back and install it.

my dads old f100 however did get more than it was optioned with since a roll of tape was left in the gas tank. it kept stopping up the carb till the found it and fished it out.

This is a great 67 thread, my car is a original Baltimore car and has the reversed stripes.... I'm enjoying this.
