Ugh..... Realized the gas leak at the carb/fuel line is because the former owner stripped the threads. The guy had two metal gaskets to try and tighten it. Realized how bad it was when I went to replace the fuel filter.....

suggestions are greatly appreciated! This sucks! It's the female end on the carb body.

The best, and permanent fix is to have it heli-coiled. You can send the main body to cliffshighperformance.com and they can fix you up.

There are some self tapping fuel filter housings made, but the will just tear up the main body worse.

Another alternative is to replace the main body. Depending on your carb number, I may have a good main body I would sell.

If one of the members here cant fix it, Allstate Carburetor does this work too. The owner is a good friend of mine and does excellent work

Thanks, this is really frustrating with summer fleeting and car stuck in the garage. The number on the carb is 7040240.

Is is it worth doing a total rebuild. It's on a 72 Buick 455 with a mild cam. Unfortunately I just don't know much about the engine as the guy that did most the work has passed away.

I would buy the correct size Heli-Coil kit and repair the threads yourself. The kits are easy to use. I repaired stripped threads on my brushcutter's engine block recently. Works a treat and a satisfying job to do yourself, IMO. (P.S. There are some good deals on the Heli-Coil kits online).

That tap is big, expensive and hard to find. It will probably cost less to buy a rebuilt carb

    I have a 72 455 carb core FWIW

Your 70 carb is a 750 cfm. A 71-74 Buick 455 carb would be 800 cfm. If you are interested in me building you a new 800 cfm Buick Quadrajet, I would take your current carb as a core. I can use it for parts.

The heli coil tap and parts are expensive, and it is also critical to be lined up with the main body since the seal is at the base of the fuel filter housing. It's all on my list of things to buy and service offered, but for now, Cliff does any that I need.

Thank you, thank you! With time an issue, I may just buy a rebuilt one and then sell the other one. I was told it was rebuilt. Then I think the threads were stripped by the guy I bought it from.

any thoughts on this carb or any other already rebuilt? I like the idea of 800 cfm if it's going to make a difference other wise 750 is fine too.

I'm just sending it to Cliffs. He's going to replace any other junk parts he finds. I gotta have faith that it'll be done right. He thought 750cfm was just fine for a 455 with a mild cam.

Stumbled across a local performance shop, so I brought it in this morning. Just getting back into this hobby is a good learning curve. Thanks again for all your help.

Looks like there are some good threads left. I can likely get a longer threaded piece where the fuel filter goes and make it work.

Might also have to cut the gas line and put in a piece of rubber hose. Looking at my gas line, it was threaded between the front of the engine and the fan belts.... Hmmmm. Is that the normal location? If I put a piece of rubber hose on it, am i running the chance of it rubbing on the fan belt? Thanks!

A few years ago I had cliffshighperformance.com install a helicoil and rebushing the baseplate of a quadrajet...I took it apart and sent the body and the base. I thought they were very reasonably priced and turn around time was very fast.
