Should no problem, you can play it safe and get another QT, better to have it than not, can always return it too, I usually cut it 10% , sprays better
I was thinking of the old 20/20 clear sorry, but yea 1 part in the 20/21 is good, I honestly think it use to be marketed as a 4 to 1 and they added the reducer later.
I don't get to spray the good clears as often as I'd like, I've got a 66 Yvette that will be getting color here soon, its omni base and 20/21 clear
I would highly recommend using basecoat hardener, which I believe is DX 57. It helps the adhesion, both to the sealer and the clear. Also, if you spray the basecoat a little too heavy, or don't allow sufficient dry time between coats, with hardener it will still dry / cure properly. We use basecoat hardener in everything we spray.
I saw that on the p-sheet for DBC as an option , says to add 5% to RTS quart ....I'm guessing that means ready to spray ?? I also see it increases my between coats an extra 5 minutes ...
It's kind of expensive, but it definitely is worth the cost and the few extra minutes between coats. I know a lot of shops don't use it, or only use it on something like a front bumper cover (much more chip resistant), but we use it in everything we spray. You are correct on RTS=ready to spray. So if you have a full reduced quart (16 oz. b/c, 16 oz. reducer) add 1.6 oz. of the DX 57. The only downside is that there is a pot life with hardener added, so it's best to not mix up too much at one time in case you run into a problem where you can't finish spraying.
its a 1 time project so cost is not much an issue .....longevity Yesterday my neighbor had a friend over to lay some clear on his own hood ,trunk lid and some small parts of a 1960's Fairlane bcs his own compressor blew up in the middle of his paint job I was watching him lay it on ....he looked like a pro the way he was spraying ...like no thought to it ...maybe bcs he had an audience :grin: garage doors wide open and it was cold last night . He laid his 1st coat on the hood and it looked super sharp no trash no nothing smooth like ice ...he was using that SPI universal clear (yea that cult spray group ) 2nd coat came a bit heavier and done he said and bragged that done meant done no cutting no polishing and it looked that way I was very impressed with his outcome ,he says he sprays about 4-5 full cars a year and used every clear on the market and says its all he uses and its not about price he said if a gallon of SPI was $400 he would still use it and highly recommended it ....now he has me thinking hmmmm he did say that if I was strictly staying with PPG to use the 2055 or 894 if I can find it ....seems discontinued .....anybodies opinion that has used SPI ??
I've only ever heard good about SPI. I would like to try both their epoxy and clear, so I may check into ordering some. If a person can get high quality at an affordable price, no use paying huge money for the big name products.
he said the first time he used it was only bcs he sprayed a project for a friend that supplied his own material 5-6 years ago and never bothered with other brand of clear there after the cleared parts are still in my neighbors garage maybe I snap a pic of it tonight ..his base was DBC a nice dark green
I am using SPI Epoxy , 2k primers and will be using thier clear on my project. After talking with the owner for about 20 minutes on the phone, I am planning on using thier products on my next project as well. Very helpful, willing to take the time necessary to explain procedures etc. to a 1st timer. Call em up, the owner actually answers the phone.... Jim /Rott Tapatalk User
Is it normal for a first time painter to go into red color panic mode o No: and besides seeing that all the reds are high $$$$ picking up color this week and now having crazy thoughts after researching other reds ....darn internet what happened to the days when red was just red ? ahhahahahah besides they all look good in other peoples picture .....hard to see ugly this one is nice /classy like Calypso Red ....usual bmw color Redfire Metallics Flame red metallic Dark red metallic Honda Sicilian Red metallic....wth Garnet red metallic
I feel your pain. I'm trying to decide on a nice orange for my non-Buick project. Just about the time I have settled on a color, I find another one that I like better. For what it's worth, I like the Sicilian red myself. Robert
yea that sicilian red looks tempting but cant seem to find anything online on it besides where I got the picture from
