Did whitewalls go the way of the Dodo?

I have been searching everywhere for whitewalls for the Skylark, in the proper size: 215/75r14. That is what is on it now, and I believe is equivalent to the original G78-14.

Closest I've found are American Classics for Big $$$, and the stripe is 1" instead of 3/4", which isn't right anyway.

This is what started my search for the 15" Rally wheels, over in the Parts Wanted section.

Is there a source that I've missed, or am I hunting for an extinct bird?

Definitely hard to find. How about these? The price is for 4, very reasonable.

Short answer- yes. They have become basically obsolete. To the bst of my knowledge, there isn't one new car made that has whites on it from the factory. The only game in town at this point is Diamondback classics for white walls if you want a name brand white wall tire and not one from some third world country

I bought the Hankooks for the '71 LeSabre; not in love with them but not bad considering price, and they look right.

Yes, kind of became obsolete like a lot of other stuff.

I bought a set of the hankooks yesterday. Coker sells some nice looking white walls. I have also heard there is a service to add the white wall appearance to any tire.

You ought to try to find 13" whitewalls...

It took me awhile but I finally did find some for my Skyhawk last summer.

I did know about the Hankook ones. A friend has them on his T-bird, but not exactly thrilled with them.

I've never even heard of Venezia tires. :Do No:

Of course, just to make it interesting, I need to find a Canadian distributor, or pay twice as much for the shipping as the tires.

Thats the dilemma with Rallys. To look their best they need the whitewalls You could go white letter, or hankook or find some cooper trendsetters somewhere left over. Im giving up on whitewalls. When funds permit Im going with Super Sport Futura GLS (made by cooper) white letter and rallys. I think it will look cool because the words have meaning instead of just the name of the tire company like cooper, goodyear, bf goodrich etc. Thats ok but I like the words super sport and futura has some meaning at least. Ideally I would have custom rims cut like they do on Chip Foose show and the wheel would be an exact replica of the factory rally wheel except it would be 18 or 19" and the whitewall would be part of the rim. Then mount the tires blackwall but when its all together it will look like a factory 15" wheel with whitewall. The whitewall could be white or chrome or brushed or whatever. Plus it could come in any width so you can put fat tires on your car. I do love the look of whitewall and rallys though. Someone could get rich with my idea since white walls are an endangered species now but I have no way to get in the middle.

Could it be that whitewalls are no longer popular because most people are too lazy, or don't want to pay the carwash extra, to keep them clean? I mean in the same way many now can't even use all the syllables in even short words because it takes to much effort to pronounce them. nuts.gif

12lives Control the controllable, let the rest go

I found these brands for WW tires:

    Multi-mile Matrix
    Cooper Trendsetter SE
    Hankook Optimo H724
    Mastercraft A/S IV
    Eldorado Golden Fury GFT

I have old Mastercrafts on my LeSabre. They have run well but now are dryrotted and need to be replaced. I have heard good things about the Coopers and Hankooks. I am leaning toward the Coopers if I can find a good local source.

Coker tires one more source (Re: Did whitewalls go the way of the Dodo?)

Dear V-8 Buick fans of retro tires,

You guys covered most of the outlets for vintage tires, but Coker is also worth checking out:

Let it be noted that this may be the shortest post ever from Edouard.:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh: Sorry, my friend, I had to.

I don't believe the Coopers are available as whitewalls in the right size anymore. At least, I couldn't find them!

they cooper trendsetters were discontinued last time I checked as well, so I went with cooper cobra blackwall.

Definitely looking endangered. (Re: Did whitewalls go the way of the Dodo?)

Dear Jerry, Dave, Gary, Gene, and V-8 Buick tire experts,

    [IMG] . . . . Alright, alright, . . . . so I'm slippin' . . . . . :Brow:

Actually time is really, really short these days . . . .

Hmm, I do believe you are correct. That's definitely a bad sign. :(

I was planning to go with Diamond Back Tires anyway, but I hate to think that's my only choice anymore . . . .

    Oh well, . . . . Edouard

Dear Edouard, Dave, Gary, Gene and all others who like their tires like their zebras: When I was going to install the 15" rallys on our '65 Skylark, I thought redlines would be a nice touch...................until I priced them! I hope whitewalls don't get priced beyond 'reasonable' as well.
