One of my Nailheads is painted red over Buick green and the other is Buick green. I like the red and as these motors will eventually find their way into traditional hot rods. I'm not concerned about scoring a class win at Pebble Beach but I like to paint my engines with a factory color to infer that it was pulled in a yard and run as is. My understanding is that some later Nailheads came from the factory painted red. Given the choice between red and green I'l take red every time. So, is there such a thing as a factory red Nailhead? OCD minds want to know.
Yes, red in 1966 only, primarily to denote an optional hp engine. 425 in the big series Buicks. 401 in the Skylark GS, even the 340 was painted red. The standard v6, 300, and 401 (non-GS) were the usual green.
I used this on my 66. High quality paint with a real nice nozzle/spray design. https://www.amazon.com/PlastiKote-209-Universal-Engine-Enamel/dp/B000CPI028
