I could really use some advise here. to many times I have ordered things and it didn't work out. today I am ready to purchase rims and tires for my 67 GS400. running a 71 8.5 10 bolt rear end. 1" wider then stock. the rear rims will be the 15 x 8 but the back spacing is whats throwing me. guys with stock rears are running 5.5 BS does this put me at 6" BS ? that seems like a lot for an 8" rim. do I go 15 x 10 w/6" BS? this is the question of the day. Rear tire I was looking at is a 255, 265 or 275/60/15 It's not about price, more of what will work Ideal for the car. 275 may be to big. IDK Fronts I will run new 15 x 7 with 235/60/15 I like a full wheel well but hate rubbing. I want to go to the edge but not go over. Please help
That's correct on the extra 1/2" on BS. For a 275 width tire, the 8" rim is fine. 10" would be too wide. I've been told 275's will fit on a 70-72 with the correct backspacing, but not sure on a '67.
i was told there is a ton of room for the 275 tire on a 67. it's the back spacing that is more of a concern. tried to measure but I don't really know what I should be looking for. the 15 x 7 I have on now have 4.25 BS. there is a ton of room behind there. I could go another 2" on the rim and 3 on the tire. the tire sits nice just inside the outer fender well. that extra 1/2" on the 71 rear end pushed it out to near perfect.
From what I have read on this site, a 15 X 8" wheel needs 5" B.S. on the early cars with the stock rear. If your 71 rear is 1" wider, that's 1/2" on each side, so add 1/4" to the B.S. None of this is for certain. If it was my car, I'd take a tape measure and do some careful measuring from the wheel mounting surface, inside and outside. See how much room you actually have, and do it for both sides.
Joe, you might want to invest in this tool before you pull the trigger on some new hoops.............https://autoplicity.com/226592-perc...re-simulator?gclid=COiE45m4jtICFdG4wAod2TgE4w. It just might eliminate any expensive and frustrating mistakes. Demo vid............https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ug3uLNL3aGc
I had a pair of 275's on a 67 with STOCK 7in wheels , I certainly don't remember there being an abundance of room on either side of the tire. I'd do 255's
Good tip, thanks Nick. Did the 67 have a stock rear end and 275's on 7" wheels ? that was one hell of a side wall bulge yes? Back spacing, back spacing? I may have to go with the special tool. lol
Absolutely, There in a company in Fresno, Ca. That makes the Buick rally in 17 x 9 I thought that would be perfect with a 275/40/17 rear

On my 72. We run a 15 x 8 rim. 4.5 backspacing. I run slicks..either hoosier 30x9 or 29x10. On the 10s the tread is starting to pull in on the corners. I could really use a 10 rim. I have a little more room on the inside than I do outside. I could shift in .5 with no issues. Not sure if this info will help on 67 cause not sure the inner wells are the same clearance or not.
I've run 275's on my 66. It's a tight fit. I did trim the wheelwell lip a little. The Chevelle 12 bolt rear I have is narrower than the stock '66 by about a half inch per side. Wheels are 15x7 Buick wheels with 4-3/8" backspace and 3-5/8" 'frontspace'. .... yes the 15x7's measure 8" wide edge-edge, and that's what backspace specs are based on. Also had Hooser 275's on there with 15x7 Weldwheels. Pretty sure they were 4-1/2" backspace. One side rubbed on the inside so had to use a spacer. Tried the 15x8 with 4.5 backspace but that pushed tires too far out. 5" backspace wasn't available, probably would've been ideal. ***There has been conflicting info here whether the later (71-ish) rears are wider than the '67 10 bolt. I always thought they were wider, but a good source says they are the same..... better measure yours to be sure!! Here are the old L60-15's on my blue 66 (close up). And the new BFG's that are 235/60-15 front and 255/50-15 rear.
That's a great stance Walt! Joe, I went with 17" Cragars on my '65. I wanted Cragars and they were also lower priced than many other styles.
Thanks for the photo Walt, I think 275 may be pushing the limits. the 255's look nice. I am pretty sure the Buick 71 rear end is 1" wider over all. I will pull the wheel again this weekend and try to measure. I think I have a better understanding on what to look for now. Jim, I love the Craiger old school look. Do you have a pic of the 17's and what size tire did you run? I haven't seen anything I like better then the Buick Rally wheel yet.
I found the most tire that I could fit on the back of my '67 was 255/60/15s. I tried 295s, 275s, and 265s before I found that the widest that would fit was the 255. I had a set of Rallyes fabbed up by Wheel Vintiques. 15 x 10 with 6-1/8 backspacing. I rolled the fender lips. The tires are perfectly centered in the wheelhouse, there's 1/4in spacing to the outside fender and to the frame at the front of the tire. This is not a good PIC because of the shadow, but this'll give you an idea od what I'm running. Thanks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Good info there Mike. Do you have a stock 67 rear end ? "15 x 10 with 6-1/8 backspacing. I rolled the fender lips" I haven't block sanded the body yet so I could roll the lip if necessary. I do have a 71 Buick 8.5 10bolt. would that require a 6 5/8" BS on 15 x 10 ? My thought is with my extra 1/2" per side i can eat that up in the BS and fall right in line
Joe I would say your thinking is correct, as mentioned earlier it's always best to get a tool to help measure and simulate the rim. I have seen them where you actually used the tire rour going run. And others that have a piece to simulate the tire. Also verify before purchase the return exchange policy, some place once a rim is mounted it's yours.
I will have to look at the tire sizes again, or there's an old thread here too. Failed at posting the picture.
