Larry, Thanks for the number. I have put a light on it and it was a crazy number like 46* but I cant see the tach at the same time. I have tape with numbers on the harmonic balancer so I'm reading the number at the zero mark on the timing cover. I'm planning on ordering the Summit Kit tonight. My current issue is I just installed the clutch fan replacing the flex fan and it just froze during my first drive, after years of just sitting. Thanks again, Mike
You have to get that down, you have way too much advance. The bushing can cut that down. It should be no more than 34*
New fan clutch installed. Kit including bushings ordered. Just rechecked 46* or more and not stopping. Looking forward to the bushing and new spring choices. Thanks all, Mike
I can't figure out how to post photos from my tablet yet. Damit, but I got the #928 Mr. GASKET kit. What springs from the kit...... light, med or strong should I start with along with the new bushing. Thanks all. Cheers, Mike
Springs don't matter at this point. You need to install the bushing and then see where your advance tops out. The lightest springs will allow all the advance in at the lowest RPM.
Larry, What holds the bushing on? The bushing spins on the shaft. Do I need a 1/8" clip? Thanks, Mike
It should be an interference fit. Maybe the pin is worn. Put a dab of epoxy on it. Make sure you push it all the way into the slot. See pictures below, http://www.v8buick.com/index.php?attachments/advancebush2-jpg.40145/ http://www.v8buick.com/index.php?attachments/advancebushing2-jpg.307016/
Ok, crisis averted. Smashed the bushing a bit and pressed it on. Starting with the kits medium springs. Mike
Ok. Distributer installed........... battery dead. Another problem in process. Got the charger on it now.
The dist. Is # 1112027. 0016. Under the advance plate...528 & CCW. Is this for a 1970 SF and does it tell a date? Thanks, Mike
It might be. My 70 Chassis manual says 1111984. I don't have the specs for the 1112027 distributor in any of my sources.
Ok. New bushing installed. Initial 10*. All in at 3200 rpm. Then eratic at +/- 2*+. The distr shaft feels tight no slop. Road test tomorrow. What do you all think. Cheers, Mike
Ok. Went for a drive..... MUCH better. Different, a little "rattle" on the test hill in third. More pep I think. It goes through gears fast on the flat. Time for new gas....1 gal 110 per tank or more Larry? Cheers, mike
Fresh premium gas is good but you shouldn't need 110. Pull the timing back to 32* total. 32-34 is the standard total timing on most BBB's. If that doesn't work I'd be checking your cylinder pressure with a compression gauge. Hopefully they didn't mill the block or heads too much. A stock cam doesn't bleed off much pressure and may be some of the problem if your actual compression is higher than stock.
RE: Engine hose collapsing in another thread. If your engine is running hot that will cause more ping. Get that sorted out first before worrying about high octane gas. I'd make sure you have a good working 180*thermostat, clutch fan, and cooling system. Some hoses have a wire coil in them to keep from collapsing. Speaking of engines I hope they blocked off the exhaust passages under the intake to keep the intake cooler. No need for exhaust going to the intake if you live where it never goes below 40*. Less chance of ping that way.
Excellent. I'll swap in a 180* thermo. Clutch fan is brand new. Gage has intake water temp at 190 * I thought it was running cool. No overheating just no pressure in upper radiator tube after 5 minutes and saw it was collapsed. No I didn't block them off. Thanks, Mike
Pull the timing back by retarding my initial by a couple degrees? Should I also try the next lighter springs?
