I'm getting ready to overhaul the complete parking brake system on my '71 GS. Even replacing the broken foot brake assembly next to the driver's kick panel. I have this assembly but need all the cables, clips and small parts going all the way back to the drum rear brakes. Where is the best place to buy everything I need in a kit? Also, I've seen part numbers that are different for Turbo 400 vs Turbo 350 trannys. My set-up is a 455 motor with 400 tranny but, I think the tranny cross member is from a 350. Does this make a difference?
Inline Tube sells complete kits. The TH400 cars use a longer front cable, and a shorter intermediate cable, due to the location of the crossmember being further back. The 4-spd and TH350 cars have the crossmember in the same location, further forward, and have a shorter front cable, and longer intermediate cable.
I used http://www.bruinbrakecables.com/ for the cat -- was very happy. I will say the biggest hassle was acquiring the right s-shaped wire hooks that connect the cables to frame and then figuring out where they attached. Initially, I had no clue which hook went where or the sizes of the missing hooks...The service manual was a big help in some regards but a picture or two from a GS owner would surely be appreciated. It's not easy to start from zero --you doubt that you've got it right. I think some Fisher engineer is still giggling in his grave about that set-up especially when the cable gets whacked by some road crap and all the pieces go flying. :_)
I recently needed a single cable and got it from Bruin Cable. No issues. Inline Tube has all of the correct hooks, with & without coatings.
Have been looking at Bruin cables- they sell a whole bunch for various cars on ebay between $22 & $35 with free shipping, but in talking to them about getting rear cables made for my Dana 60-under-a-Buick, they wanted $135 engineering fee per cable (unless the left & right were the same), $20-45 for materials & $10-25 for shipping- that's a potential $340 for 2 cables. And how come they don't know how much it would cost to ship 2 brake cables?
