Does anyone know off hand what size bolts are used to hold the fan to the clutch? I need to space my fan out of the shroud an inch or so.
I looked more closely at some pics of stock 300 shrouds vs what I have. While the shape is very similar, I don't know if one could be trimmed enough to look like the one I have. Perhaps mine is a custom or aftermarket shroud?
Hmm. Yours does look slightly different than my original 66 Skylark 300 shroud. I wonder if yours might be from a v6 car or even some other model. There is a molded in part number on mine. It is at the top on the passenger side of the single bolt hole that goes into the radiator top plate. You should be able to see it with a light. It is on the vertical flange the bolt goes through. Mine is 1372784.
I've done some looking around online. Even finding pics of the elusive 67 GS400 fan shroud is tough. The pics I did find of the full shroud looks a lot like yours, I believe yours is a GS400 shroud. I'll find out more tomorrow when I try to fit my 300 shroud back on my car with my 455.
Yeah it sure does. I stand corrected then. I thought the GS 400 shroud was just a small plate on the top. Like this (pic attached). Thanks for clearing that up. Now it makes sense why it fits so good!
I have trimmed my 300 fan shroud down from 5 in thick to 3 in thick. I still have to reattach the upper bolt flange and notch the bottom for the core support tangs. Hoping it works! So how deep is a real 67 GS400 fan shroud?
Flex fans do not create "lift" in the front side, so they cannot effectivly "pull" air. That is why "good" fan blades have varied pitch and camber, they are "air screws", same as an aircraft propeller. Flex fan blades are piss poor propellers. And many of the cheap ones will crack along the rivits and fail, often slicing and dicing your radiator, belst and hoses.
Thanks Nick. Hopefully it'll fit and work properly. I definitely needed it. If I measured correctly, my clutch fan blades should be a little more than halfway in the shroud.
Perfect. That's exactly what I've got now. I just hope the fan's centered in the opening, other than that, I think it should work.
OK. Here is my modified 300 fan shroud that is now installed with my 455. I trimmed 1 1/4" from radiator side and 3/4" from the round fan side. The stock 300 shroud is 5" deep and my modified shroud is now 3" deep. Now, here is the trick. The fan offset on the 300 fan is the wrong way. I flipped the shroud upside down, cut the slot for the core support tab on the lower drivers side, the angled tapered corner on passenger side fits between the lower core support tab and radiator and I fabricated a tab to bolt the upper center of the shroud to the upper radiator support plate. I think it turned out rather well, and if I didn't just tell everyone it's a modified 300 shroud, you probably wouldn't know it. Thanks to Walt for mentioning trimming the 300 shroud and flipping it. If it wasn't for him, I probably wouldn't have attempted it.
