HELP!!!!! Ok here are my problems. One the repop mirror gaskets I bought from Cars Inc are too thin and the mirrors set cocked. The repop gaskets are 1/16 of an inch too thin on the thick side of the gasket. Can I remove some metal on the mirror base to level the mirrors without misaligning the machine screw that attaches the mirror?
Two, the door handle gaskets which also came from Cars Inc fit terribly. The one on the button end of the handle is too small and the other end is much too big. My options here buy from another supplier hoping they have a different manufacturer and the gaskets fit or buy some material and try to fabricate my own.

    Suggestions please. Jim

Are you sure you have the correct mirrors is the first question?

How did you verify this is the second?

All the door handle gaskets suck, no matter the manufacturer from my experience anyway

On the door handle gaskets, mine fit terribly, but I was able to elongate the holes where needed, and then trim the excess with a razor blade. I did this for a 57 Buick as well, from the same supplier.

I don't know about the mirror gaskets, other than you have to have the right mirrors + gaskets. I do know there are a LOT of GM type door handle gaskets available. Been there, done that. If you look at one company like SoffSeal, they have maybe 3-6 different door handle gasket kits. You have to know what handles are on your car, and which kits fit which handles. Look at images on Google of Soffseal door handle gaskets and you will see what I'm talking about. The problem arises when sellers only carry one kit for 1955-76 or something like that. Look at the images and you can easily see the differences of the small end, etc.

I have to assume that the mirrors are correct as I bought the car new. But that does not mean a lot as it came with a 350 air cleaner and we all know what assuming does. I do have the original gaskets and the repops are 1/16 thinner than the originals.

    Thanks Jim

Technically the SPORT MIRRORS were only available on the GSX in 1970... They were an option for 1971 and 1972. I assume (There's THAT word again) that you have verified that you have the CORRECT mirrors by the casting numbers. other mirrors sourced from other GM cars will "work, but are of slightly different base angles, which requires different gaskets. Here is THE CORRECT REFERENCE for Sport Mirrors for 70-72 Skylark (CLONES) and GS/ GSX cars.

You bought the 1970 GSX NEW??

I just installed repop door handles and yes, the gaskets suck. Are they the correct handles. Some are cantered up and the OEM units should be perfectly horizontal. Use spray adhesive and glue the gaskets onto the handles. Take a razor blade and shave the edges clean. It helps if you can punch a hole in some sheet metal (an old door maybe?) and trim that way. The mirror wedges probably suck as well. Mine were home made from black plastic on a belt sander. Works for me! ws

Pics show incorrect and correct handles and the mirror wedge for 1971-72 sport mirrors. DONT TRIM THE MIRROR BASES!

I think I have a set of door handle gaskets to sell you. Mine are nos and fit my car very well. I'll take a look if you are interested. GM used a blob of Dumdum to hold the gasket(s) onto the handle to make installation easy.

Yes I bought a 1970 GSX new. Thanks to my Dad for signing on the line, I have owned it since June of 1970. An awful lot of car for an 18 year old. I will post some pictures as soon as I get the hood back on it. Thanks for the advice. I did notice the stripe on the car in your photos I like the white ones too. Whats is its story? As mentioned above I will check the casting numbers on the mirrors. Matt let me know on the gaskets. That would be great.

Will do, Jim. May be a day or two, though. You need for both sides? I should have lock gaskets, too.

Yes, both sides and lock gaskets.

    Thanks Jim

That's pretty darn cool! I bought my first 455/4 speed from my brother in 1972 that he ordered new. I think I paid him $2K back then with 40K on the clock. BMD bought me 2 new long blocks and 2 new 4 speeds before that chapter was over. It was the baddest lad in high school! This one is an XGS 455 cloned from a GS 350. A frame off in 1990 then parked in a dirt floor Morton bldg. for 20 years. Had to go back through the whole thing but still did OK on the $$$ part. Runs good and the OEM AC blows snowflakes now. ws

Nice car, I so wish I had AC. They get pretty warm inside when you get the engine hot.

Thanks everyone for the help. Jim

    IlliniGSX,

Here are some past (relatively recent) threads which discuss the correct wedge shape of the '70-'72 Skylark/GSX Sport Mirror gaskets. A Board member named Copeddler68 apparently reproduces these specific ones for Buicks. You may have to copy and paste the addresses in your URL if the hyperlinks aren't working.

I love em without a/c. Screams factory race car and less clutter in the engine bay.

I hate to break the bubble for anyone, but Copeddler68 was trying to sell NON_CORRECT mirrors as being GS mirrors. I also note that Duane never responded... THAT in itself raises questions... Copeddler68 has not been on here since November 2016. If I recall, he was BANNED...

Why would your selling the "correct" mirror gaskets for the 70-72 GS sport mirrors piss anyone off. I have not had them available for some time now, so the introduction of a new "repro" part should be a blessing for the guys here.

If anyone is questioning the "correctness" of your part..............if you send me one, I would be willing to match one of your gaskets against an original that I have here. That should end all the discussion, and I will gladly state the info on this board, and send your repro back to you.

I don't think anyone here is pissed about your product, I think it's more about the statement that the Camaro mirrors are the same as the 70-72 GS sport mirrors.

Also, a quote from a posting about the sport mirrors. YES, I was involved. I don't want to see anybody ripped off, and TRIED to do it as gentle as possible, but when they REFUSE to follow advice from MULTIPLE people, even moderators, then what happens MUST happen.

Copeddler68, 70-81 Camaro mirrors are NOT the same. The only part that MIGHT be the same is the mirror lens house/backing. The mirror glass itself WILL be DIFFERENT after the convex "OBJECTS IN THE MIRROR ARE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR" went into production. The pedestal stand and the body itself are NOT the same. Look at the casting numbers inside and you will see that they are DIFFERENT . Yes, they will physically fit, and you can simply flip the stock CAMARO gasket and trim off the 'locating dot' to make them work.
      http://www.buickperformanceclub.com/SportMirrors.htm

BUT THEY ARE NOT THE SAME.

OK, so you've SOLD a lot of mirrors. Still does NOT make them correct. The casting numbers on Camaro's are NOT CORRECT. Just look at the link that SEVERAL people have provided. Just trying to PREVENT somebody that does not know better from getting the WRONG MIRRORS...

I was not referring to mirrors, I was referring to sport mirror gaskets. I remember seeing some well known Member's posts indicating that they had purchased sport mirror gasket sets from copeddler68 and that they were "correct". I do not know copeddler68 nor have I had prior dealings with him, but I do know he previously was selling mirrors (general "GM" sport mirrors) and gasket sets he claimed were correct reproductions for GSs. Because he did not take Duane's offer up to inspect them is not dispositive on the issue, but you can read into it what you will. Maybe someone can confirm the correct angle measurements as copeddler68 gave that info out and Duane could also confirm if that angle (wedge) is correct. It sounds like this might just be a good repro project if there is that much demand for them.
