I am having a really hard time getting the sending unit wire apart in the trunk. Is there a trick to this. It looks like it should just come apart if I lift the one tab but it will not come apart. It has never been disconnected so I am not sure if that is part of the problem. I don't want to damage it. Mark
It's just that one tab. You can stick like a small screwdriver in the tab so it's lifted, then use two pairs of pliers to pull it apart. I like to lift the tab with a small screwdriver, then stick another small screwdriver where the 2 connectors join and gently pry them apart. That's the safest way.
I'm going to have to do this since my fuel gauge isn't reading anything besides full. Is this accessible only by dropping the tank?
There are 2 wires on the sender. A tan (I think) wire that goes to the gauge, and a black wire that goes to the body. The tan wire is the wire Mark's asking about. Inside the trunk, near the latch, you should see the tan wire with the connector. That's w/o looking, I have a lot of different cars, but it's generally there. The ground wire is under the car, above the tank a little bit on the driver's side. It's maybe 12" or less from the tank center. It's screwed to the body there, that's the ground for the sender. You don't have to drop the tank for either. But...there could be a prob where they attach to the sender, and you have to drop the tank to see that.
Crawl under from rear towards rear differential , look up between front of tank and differential. Ground wire is screwed into body. Often it gets rusty and gauge quits. Unscrew, wirewheel , new screw, sum paint , all done. Hopefully. If still no go, your sender may be done for, and the tanks gutta come down for that....Jim/Rott
Hey before you break out the wire wheel, don't forget that the gas vent fumes are WAY more flammable than the gas itself (especially on a warm day when the fumes collect a bit). Take a look at where the tank vents before you get too busy with the wire wheel - creating sparks. Maybe get an old shirt or something and protect the area from sparks or use an old fashion wire brush by hand. Yes, I know it should be fine but.......
True true, the 70 tank vent is not far at all, tucked up in the front of the tank ,passenger side. Perhaps sum sandpaper would suffice. Don't wanna be responsible for blowing Brett and his car up.....Jim/Rott
I tried the screwdriver and "gently" prying the connector apart and it will not come apart. I do not want to damage the connector. ideas? Mark
They usually come apart pretty easily. If you damage the plastic, its easily replaceable. Cheap too! http://www.ebay.com/itm/DELPHI-PACK...ash=item544d6c053d:g:QTsAAOxyM89SbAVc&vxp=mtr
FWIW, once you get the connector apart... Unplug the tan wire connector and ground the tan wire that's going back to the gas gauge. Turn the IGN on and see if the gas gauge goes to empty. If it does, everything back to the gauge is good.
This is an all original survivor and I am trying really hard not to damage any parts and keep them as original as possible. Mark
Understood, but the fuel gauge still needs to be fixed and that connector still needs to come apart. If the plastic gets damaged, you can just remove the plastic from the metal connectors and replace the plastic itself. The replacement is identical to the original. Try using a larger screwdriver to pry in between the connectors. Not sure why is not coming apart.
Ok...I totally understand you don't want to damage anything. Truth is, I could snip both ends of that connector off, put new terminals and covers on, and you would never be able to tell. Those connectors are all over the car, if you plan to work on it, you're going to have to try harder! That's my pep talk for today. Here's a pic I took today of the same connector, different color. You jam a screwdriver (red one) under the locking tab, then you pry (white one). Once you get it moved a little bit, you stick a wider screwdriver where the white one is.
