Thanks for looking at my post. I'm wondering if someone could post a pic or two of a correct for 1970 fender emblem, the 455 emblem. ALSO, if possible I'd like to know the part number of this emblem. I am under the impression that the 455 emblem that's been reproduced is Not correct for a 70, at least the one that's offered by OPGI. And, is this a one year only emblem or is the 71 & 72 emblem the same? As always Thank You All For Your Help!! Mark
Do you have an assembly manual? The part number is in there in the front end sheet metal section. Mine is not handy so I cannot check it. I doubt very much that 70-72 was any difference.
I think the 70 was a one year emblem. I think it may have changed during the year. I remember reading something here before. The 1st emblem was flimsy or something like that. There was not enough reinforcement around the 455 numbers.
Emblem for 70-72 was superceded to 1394737 by the time the 75 parts book was printed. That is most likely the one you will find NOS .
I guess I'm wrong, Dave! I know it was something...Maybe they didn't have a correct repro before. I definitely remember reading here about Dave Kleiner or somebody else trimming the emblems to look like 70's.
Here is a picture of a correct original that were used from '70-72. Second picture lower part is what GM had available sometime after that time. I was always told that they were Pontiac emblems. Not sure what the top ones are, but, they are GM parts - no repro's. Hope this helps.
I just had remembered having read something here, or somewhere about trimming them. I think it's because there were no repros at first, people doing high end restorations were trimming that bottom emblem in your pic to look like the original posted. Apparently, they make the right emblems now.
Thank you all for the feedback! I just got back from the 2017 GS Nats in Bowling Green. Armed with the info and pics that was provided in replies to my question I was able to figure out what's correct and what's not. The correct 455 emblem would have blacked out areas in the center of the 4 and also in the center of the 5s, But NOT at the bottom of the emblem. Matt Knutson showed the correct emblem in the pic of the emblem that's mounted on the fender. The first pic I have posted here is correct, the next two are apparently what was made as a NOS emblem. I was told at the Nats that restorers wanting a correct 455 emblem took one like in the bottom two pictures and ground out the bottom areas that are blacked out. I guess they would then have them rechromed. A lot of work But if it's gotta be correct then there may not be another option. Thanks Again! Mark
And now for the Monkey Wrench ... The pins have a different hole pattern than the originals. Not a problem if you are using different fenders or you can plug weld the holes closed and redrill for the newer type emblem. Much care must be taken to place the holes correctly on the fender. I have templates from original fenders if you need a copy. You will need to make the new emblem fit the template of the original and go from there. L&R are different.
