Okay, so i have a 1970 Buick Wildcat with factory buckets and power windows. The car is White with a Black Vinyl Top, and Black Interior (only color offered in buckets). As I start to plan out what i want my car to look like I've realized it doesnt have to be White. Yes white is the original color, and my car is one of roughly 500 made with buckets, but how important is originality with this car (need opinions). It's not a high dollar muscle car, and I dont plan on selling it. I love my white and black color combo, But ive also looked into some other 1970's GM colors that interest me. Does anyone know of any "rare" factory colors for cars in the 1960's and 1970's? Im not crazy about generic resale colors. When I go to car shows Im always attracted to either cars that I don't normally see (like my wildcat) and popular cars in rare colors (I once saw a 70 challenger painted in a GM light blue and it looked amazing) thats when i realized anyone could have a brightly colored muscle car, the ones that stand out to me are the not so generic colors. I aim to stay period correct, so 60's/70's colors, and would prefer to stick with a GM color but I'm open to anyones opinions.
Titan red, steel cities grey, come to mind Cadillac had some great colors for big cars, especially a really cool green similar to heritage green that suited the long flanks real well
If you plan on keeping paint it what you love, drive the crap outa it and enjoy. the big buicks arent high dollar have to be factory original colors cars I dont think they ever will be but they are slowly rising
‘69 Fireglow, ‘71 Lime Mist, ‘70 Burgundy Mist, any year Apple Red (almost every Wildcat ad shows red). ‘71 Tropical Lime, ‘72 Flame Orange (? not sure on a Buick), ‘68 Dark Grey Metallic (code V). Get a paint chip book and look at the Cadillac ‘Firemist’ colors-some wild stuff, including ‘Chateau Mauve ‘mist’. Patrick Hugger beat me to it!
I’d stick with a color that was available from Buick on that car. When time comes to sell you will have a larger potential buying pool by not alienating those who prefer more originality. You should able to find a color you like and kill two birds with one stone.
I love the dark navy blue offered on the 1970 Buick’s, but again I’m crossed, 1970 cadillac had a silvery pink (similar the chateau mauve but lighter and more silver) that would be really different. I photoshopped some variations of some colors I’ve considered. By the way was there any special order colors that stick out for 60’s / 70’s cars? Another reason why I’m hesitant about staying the original white is that I’m trying to figure out if it’s possible to install a sunroof in my car (not any generic sunroof, but a sunroof from a like 70 Cadillac, no glass just metal covered in vinyl)
'69 Cadillac has a lighter purple called Wisteria. Firethorn red is a nice choice-used in '76 both Buick and Cadillac. Cadillac did a vivid lime green in '74 and a mandarin orange in '75. At the BCA Nationals this year, there was a gorgeous frame off restored '65 Riviera GS painted a Cadillac color called "Samoan Bronze" very eye catching! That's the nice thing about having black interior-you can paint any color you want!
I love my sunset silver 69 riv. Never see that colour. In direct light it's more silver and in softer light it is more pinky purple
So was asking for color help on this forum helpful? Ha, ha, ha... Like previous said, if you're gonna keep it paint it what you want. Mikey
It’s going to look good no matter what color you paint it but I think the Mopar color Tawny Gold might look classy on there with the black top. GM equivalent?
After all is said and done, if you decide to change the color "drastically", be prepared for a ton of work to do it proppa, or the amateurish job will by far surpass any hideous color you could choose. Color is a matter of choice, and resale value should really only be considered after the quality of the job. Theres all the door jamb stuff, under the hood stuff and all the trunk stuff. Then if a real connoisseur checks the build tag all bets are off anyways. Stick with a nice bright white (as an old auction guy told me, white hides all the flaws) and that's sooo true. Mine was repainted (pretty decent job) from flame orange to Apollo white(ish) with a dust of some pearl on top of that which looks great (not too strong) but what a pain to try and match. I did a bunch of repair work from the door guards down and you cant see it below the rubber. The bad thing about white is the prep though; even the most minute speck of bare metal is going to rust and leave a streak down the side, and it WILL stand out, especially under window trim and anything that will stress crack like around hinges etc. JMHO... The pics are the same paint in rainy overcast and in bright sunshine. It would look good in 1970 Diplomat blue though... ws
I have a white 69 cat with black vinyl top, with black bucket interior, the car looks awesome, it was green vinyl top on green paint from the factory. I like white!
Proven Fact . White cars are safest. Get hit the least.if I had a wildcat leave the jambs white. Paint car in pearl
